Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Portland, OR, United States

Department Overview

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, is known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine and an international leader in research and cancer treatment. With its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building on its groundbreaking expertise in targeted therapy to improve outcomes for patients with advanced cancer and to enhance the ability to detect cancer at its earliest stages. From laboratory science to clinical trials of new treatments to studying populations at risk, the institute's scientists are advancing the understanding of the root causes of cancer and finding ways to improve detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Leveraging our faculty's expertise and collective strengths, the institute's strategic plan targets three areas of focus: 1) Culture of Inclusion & Innovation, 2) Precision Early Detection, and 3) Precision Oncology.

Function/Duties of Position

To further our goal of advancing a culture of inclusion and innovation, the Knight Cancer Institute has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director (AD) of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to oversee these efforts across our healthcare, academic, and research missions. This faculty leader will bring a deep commitment and experience to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism efforts already underway and will guide the development of innovative policies and programs to further diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism across missions.

* As a leader in addressing healthcare disparities, the AD of DEI will partner closely with cancer service line leaders and the School of Medicine to identify health disparities and develop strategies to improve outcomes, health equity, and diversify our patient base. Applicants with a background in health disparities research are highly encouraged to apply.* As a leader in enhancing academic programs, the AD of DEI will partner closely with educational leaders across the cancer institute, the School of Medicine Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Office, and OHSU institutional leaders to build and sustain diverse, inclusive, and equitable educational programs and to train the next generation of cancer researchers and providers to embrace diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism principles throughout their professional career.* As a leader in enhancing research activities, the AD of DEI will partner closely with basic, clinical, and translational researchers to improve understanding of unique disparities present in our population and guide researchers in utilizing culturally appropriate strategies for community engagement and participation in all facets of our research.* As a leader supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce, the AD of DEI will partner closely with cancer institute leadership and human resources to recruit, hire, retain, develop and advance a diverse, culturally competent learning community and workforce.* As a leader in our community, the AD of DEI will build and enhance community, academic, and business partnerships to engage diverse communities in the achievement of the Knight Strategic Plan and the Knight Guiding Principles.

Required Qualifications

PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree, or Masters level degree

Board-certified (if eligible and appropriate to the degree) in their related field

Candidate will have past experience leading or participating in diversity initiatives (e.g., service on diversity committees, workforce development, policy development, health equity, recruitment and retention strategies).

Additional Details

This role will be a full-time assignment, with 0.4 FTE focused on the DEI efforts described above. The remainder of the 1.0 FTE will be a separate faculty appointment within OHSU and is dependent on the institution's needs and the candidate's expertise.

Interested candidates should provide their curriculum vitae (CV) along with a letter of interest outlining key experiences and relevant accomplishments to Kendra Thompson of Merritt Hawkins at [email protected].

As of Oct. 18, 2021, all OHSU employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Fully vaccinated means you have received both doses of a two-dose, or one dose of a single-dose, FDA- or WHO-authorized COVID-19 vaccine and at least 14 days have passed since your final dose of COVID-19 vaccine. If you apply for and are offered a position, you must be fully vaccinated prior to starting work.

If the position you are offered does not require direct, in-person patient care contact, you may request an exception to the vaccine policy for medical or religious reasons. OHSU uses very narrow criteria under the law to allow an exception and very few requests are being approved.
