Research Specialist_

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a **_Research Specialist_** who will be working in the productive environment of a federal and privately funded laboratory. The laboratory focuses on the development of innovative cell and gene therapies for the treatment of inflammation and cancers, using immune- and virus-based approaches. This position requires a proficient and experienced laboratory scientist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in molecular biology, cloning and tissue culture. The successful candidate will conduct research independently or with minimal supervision, have knowledge of virus engineering, production and purification, and animal experiments. This individual participates in the design of experiments, analyzes data, and may contribute to manuscripts. They will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**

+ Demonstrate organization for lab related projects, scientific curiosity related to the gene therapy field, teamwork and leadership towards problem solving in both common and project specific issues, and flexibility.

+ Exhibit a sophisticated understanding of the molecular and viral biology as it pertains to gene therapy.

+ Participates in experiments and data analysis, formulates preliminary conclusions and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results.

+ Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.

+ May also utilize other sophisticated instrumentation such as fluorescence, luminescence spectrophotometer.

+ Manage and make purchases of basic laboratory supplies and specific project necessities.

+ Perform necessary administrative tasks such as but not limited to grant progress reports.

+ Educate, train, and supervise new students and other research staff that assist in the project.

+ Meet regularly with PI and colleagues to review lab data, troubleshoot problems, prioritize tasks, and discuss newly published scientific literature relevant to the cell and gene therapy field.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**

+ Demonstrated proficiency in windows-based word processing, internet, and spreadsheet.

+ Ability to work independently, as a team member, and under direct supervision.

+ Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

+ Organizational and analytical skills.

+ Flexibility in responding to assignments.

+ Able to work with a diverse research staff and with confidential materials.

+ Will follow protocols, policies and procedures and respond appropriately when presented with novel situations.

**Minimum Qualifications**

+ Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

+ One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

+ Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

+ Ability to remain in this position for several years.

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ Previous experience with HSV, AAV or retrovirus.

Starting Salary Range: $16.92 - $29.61 HRLY ($48,400 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
