Executive Director of Medical Advancement - University Advancement

Position Summary

The Executive Director of Medical Advancement reports to the Vice Chancellor for Medical Advancement and is responsible for providing strategic fundraising leadership and direction to the faculty and the advancement professionals in neurosciences at the Washington University School of Medicine. WashU Medicine is home to the nation's #1 Department of Neurology and is #1 in Alzheimer's Disease research funding. The Executive Director will serve on the Medical Advancement Senior Leadership Team, will manage a team of frontline fundraisers, and will have frontline fundraising goals and responsibilities.

Job Description

Traveling will be required for this position.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

* Carry a personal portfolio and develop innovative strategies for personally cultivating and soliciting new prospects, as well as existing donors, in the near-term and position assigned disease areas and departments for the long-term. Serve as a strategic partner to the Vice Chancellor to provide leadership in the planning, preparation, and execution of a comprehensive plan for increasing support from a diverse donor base to support assigned areas.

* Assist assigned Department Chairs and other faculty leaders in prioritizing their funding needs and in developing appropriate fundraising strategies to meet those needs.

* Set appropriate metrics and manage and mentor a staff, including multiple Sr. Directors of Advancement and administrative support staff.

* Serve as strategic thought partner with Associate Vice Chancellor, Medical Advancement to enhance the grateful patient program in coordination with key University Advancement and School of Medicine stakeholders.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree in business, public administration, nonprofit administration, or similar field.

* Significant work experience in a matrixed academic medical center setting.

* Eight years of major gift campaign experience within a medical advancement setting with a track record of successful major gift solicitation and knowledge of larger gift vehicles such as planned giving.

* Powerful management skills, both strategic and operational, making for a productive and effective department - one where staff are committed to the organization, and feel ownership and pride in their work, and where openness and communication are mutually valued

* Deep appreciation for and an ability to successfully articulate the mission and aspirations of the Washington University School of Medicine.

* Desire to play a meaningful role in the University's community and to share in the community's commitment to research and education.

* Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for individual giving.

* Ability to work successfully with administration, faculty, and volunteers as appropriate to secure gifts for the assigned disease areas and Departments.

* Desire and ambition to work in an organization that is evolving at an accelerated pace.

* Ability to listen carefully, learn quickly and work effectively in a complex organization.

* Superior communication skills; the ability to speak credibly about higher education and the aspirations of the School of Medicine; clarity, crispness and effectiveness in written and oral presentation.

* Exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with high net worth individuals.

* Knowledge of HIPAA and its requirements for development activities; discretion and confidentially for donor and prospect information.

* Desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across development offices. Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow through.

* Good sense of humor a plus.

* Competence with general office software including Microsoft Office and with web-based development tools.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree.

* Minimum of eight years of related experience.
