Executive Director
Baltimore, MD, United States
Maryland Legal Services Corporation (MLSC) is seeking an Executive Director to fulfill the organization’s mission and statutory mandate. MLSC has just undergone a period of dramatic growth, and now is an exciting time to join our organization.
As the Executive Director you will oversee MLSC strategy and operations including legislative advocacy, grantmaking, Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) compliance, and fiscal office management. You will be responsible for protecting and pursuing organization funding to maintain and expand civil legal services through state legislative activities. The Executive Director must be an effective liaison with stakeholders such as the grantee community, Maryland Access to Justice Commission, Maryland State Bar Association, Maryland judicial and legislative branches, and the Office of the Attorney General. You’ll develop and recommend grantor policies and procedures to ensure funds are used in accordance with MLSC’s statutory mandate and funding-specific requirements. You’ll also represent MLSC at state and national events, conferences and meetings.
The Executive Director serves as a champion and advocate for nonprofit legal services providers and Maryland’s civil legal aid delivery system as a whole. This will be an exceptional opportunity for you to leverage your legislative and financial acumen, along with a “never give up” approach to supporting low-income Marylanders, all while leading a small but talented team of highly dedicated, passionate nonprofit professionals.
Required Skills:
You should possess familiarity with social services, issues facing nonprofit organizations and grants, which may come from board, volunteer, or staff service.
Required Experience:
You will be qualified for this opportunity if you possess a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of nonprofit experience including budgeting, compliance, finance and fiscal controls. Experience with the legislative process and public policy advocacy work is required, with Maryland-specific experience preferred. A J.D. degree or other relevant advanced degree is preferred, as is experience with the nonprofit civil legal service providers in Maryland. Prior leadership experience serving as an executive director, deputy director or senior staff member is also preferred.
As an equal opportunity employer, we strive to recruit, develop, and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool, and we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply for this opportunity.
