Senior Training Associate, Justice Transformation

General Description:

Urban Peace Institute is seeking a Justice Transformation Senior Training Associate. This is a fast-paced position that requires initiative, administrative coordination, facilitation and research and writing ability. UPI’s Justice Transformation Team partners with the County of Los Angeles, including the Department of Youth Development and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, offering trainings that support both youth and adult justice transformation. Training platforms provide concrete skills, personal development opportunities and systemic social analyses to providers within the youth and adult diversion programs, as well as the credible messenger mentoring initiative. We desire a highly motivated person who is committed to social justice and has the keen ability to support the organizational implementation of trainings, along with assisting the overall work of the Justice Transformation team and UPI generally. The Justice Transformation Senior Training Associate will also support UPI’s existing juvenile justice transformation efforts, inclusive of policy research and analysis, and engagement with the Los Angeles Youth Uprising coalition. Position is local, requiring in person/in-field meeting with hybrid capability.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Training Development, Coordination and Logistics

Support the development of UPI’s Justice Transformation Training Platforms, inclusive of youth diversion, adult law enforcement assisted diversion, and the credible messenger mentoring program

Support training implementation including coordination, outreach, and scheduling with subject

Create and update training materials as needed. This includes presentations, handouts, and other instructional material

Assist in the design of curriculum and lesson plans for training sessions, incorporating evidence based practices and proven pedagogical approaches for adult learners

Assist with note-taking in conversations with/between stakeholders including service providers, credible messengers, and CBO leadership to support program and training refinement

Support in contracting and payment logistics, including the creation of subcontractor agreements, and tracking of invoices and other related expenditures;

Develop resource guides synthesizing best practices, research, and relevant case studies that support training curriculum and can be shared with all participants

Prepare administrative materials, agendas, and reports for meetings with collaborative partners

Research/Policy

Conduct research to strengthen UPI’s analysis on diversion, credible messengers, youth development and other juvenile justice system transformations including literature reviews of national best practices, program evaluations, and analysis of relevant data

Research foundational learning theories to enhance the effectiveness of training design, delivery, and facilitation

Track national, state, and local developments in policy related to diversion, credible messengers, youth development, alternative crisis response, community justice models and juvenile justice.

UPI General

Participate and represent UPI in meetings and forums with community members, public officials, law enforcement, statewide coalitions, and other subject matter experts.

Work in alignment with other UPI projects to strengthen overall UPI mission for safe and healthy communities

Work in alignment with organization-wide initiatives to strengthen overall organizational cohesion and collaboration

Participate in agency wide planning, development and communication activities as needed and ensure adherence to agency wide goals and policies within the project area.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty with excellence. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

A bachelor’s degree is required, preferred in relevant field of study including public policy, criminology, sociology, political science, public health, and others;

Ability to work effectively with diverse people across the spectrum of socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, and gender orientation;

Understanding of intersectional social & racial justice issues and demonstrates a personal and professional commitment to advancing these goals

Background in education, training, teaching, and curriculum design within community and/or nonprofit settings is highly desired

Strong administrative and organizational skills, with an emphasis on excel proficiency are highly desired

Knowledge of Urban Peace issues and/or youth development, diversion, credible messenger mentoring is highly desired;

Experience in research is desired;

Lived experience with the impacts of the criminal justice system and or previous experience working with justice impacted/involved communities is desired

General understanding of the historical and contemporary harms of the criminal justice system, particularly the impacts on youth and young adults

Excellent written and oral communication skills (i.e., grant and report writing, outreach, facilitation, and message delivery);

Ability to take on responsibilities independently and work as a team with only general supervision;

Strong analytical abilities, self-starter, organized, and detail oriented;

Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills;

Familiarity with various forms of social media.

Annual Salary and Benefits: $60,000-$70,000. Includes health, dental, and vision benefits, disability options, a flexible spending account, and 401k. Parking is also included.
