JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Director of Family Giving, the Assistant Director of Family Giving assists and supports a comprehensive Family Giving fundraising program to generate significant major gift fundraising from parents, grandparents and families to support the mission and goals of Pomona College. The Assistant Director serves as a key member of the Office of Advancement and assists the Director of Family Giving to qualify, cultivate and solicit for annual and major gifts. The Assistant Director will support and assist the Director of Family Giving in the day-to-day management of Pomona's Family Leadership Council. The Assistant Director is personally responsible for soliciting and closing major gifts of $50,000 or more. The position requires judgment and ability to act independently to plan and accomplish goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting directly to the Director of Family Giving, the Assistant Director of Family Giving performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:

In support of the Director of Family Giving, assist in the implementation of a comprehensive development plan to increase philanthropic support from highly-rated parent prospects.

Manage a portfolio of 125+ active family prospects with the capacity to make $50,000+ gifts, including assessment, identification, engagement, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts from a personal portfolio of parent prospects, and stewarding parent donors.

Achieve annual and campaign development goals.

Experience recruiting and managing volunteer relationships.

Develop effective fundraising strategies in coordination and collaboration with Director of Family Giving and members of the Pomona Advancement team.

Work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities and develop funding proposals and negotiate and structure gifts.

In close coordination with the Director of Family Giving, collaborate with all Pomona Advancement partners including Vice President for Advancement, Advancement leadership team, Major and Principal Gifts, Leadership Annual Giving, Alumni and Family Engagement, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Annual Gifts, Planned Giving, Advancement Operations, Stewardship and Donor Relations, Prospect Research and Relationship Management, and Advancement Communication and Events to support the successful achievement of annual and campaign development goals. Strategically coordinate strategies for major gift solicitations with Pomona Advancement partners. Actively involve the college administration, department heads, faculty, and key volunteers in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation process as appropriate.

In close partnership with Director of Family Giving consult on relevant programming for families during College events, including Orientation, Family Weekend and Commencement, as well as lectures, symposiums and other events.

Maintain an efficient, collegial, and proactive work environment.

Support the Director of Family Giving to manage and support Pomona's Family Leadership Council and its members.

Prepare briefing and training materials for Family Leadership Council activities, as assigned.

Travel regularly for donor cultivation, along with meetings and events.

Attend campus activities such as lectures, symposia and other events to foster strong relationships with families that result in philanthropic contributions; serve as a resource, advocate, and spokesperson for advancement programs at Pomona.

Support the Director of Family Giving in working with College partners to improve prospect relationships with the College through enhanced parent-related web pages, social media, and other forms of communications, with special emphasis on messaging to parents about giving.

Support the Director of Family Giving in collaborating with the Office of Communications and Advancement Communications on articles and production of the parent e-newsletter, as well content for parents' Website and social media strategies for other virtual community building vehicles (Facebook, twitter, etc.)

Coordinate special projects/tasks and assist as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned to meet College priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree is required.

Experience: A minimum of three years of professional work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and fundraising experience required with a proven record of accomplishment and taking initiative. Experience fundraising from families and parents is desired. Demonstrated fundraising experience at an academic institution is desirable. Relevant corporate, non-profit leadership, or military experience may be substituted for fundraising experience.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS:

The Assistant Director of Family Giving must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using other skills and abilities not listed below.

Ability to build strong relationships with prospects, donors, volunteers, as well as faculty, staff and administrators.

Experience in promoting and coordinating the involvement of volunteers.

A high-energy goal-oriented worker who is well organized and personable.

Utilize a creative approach to fundraising projects.

Deploy professional skills in fundraising, family relations, alumni relations, annual giving, and related knowledge of the advancement field, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College's strategic interests.

Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication facilitate, motivate and inspire a diverse group families, alumni, volunteers and stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, customer relationship management database (Pomona currently uses EverTrue and Raiser's Edge), and social media networking. Demonstrated understanding of the use of technology in assessing and improving Advancement systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.

Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the College's strategic vision and the division's annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.

Must understand and communicate the mission and history of the College's liberal arts environment.

Must have exceptional organizational, time management, analytical, presentation, negotiation, and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.

A proven track record of success in personally qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from alumni, parents and individuals.

A high level of comfort and effectiveness working with high-net-worth individuals and corporate business leaders, domestically and internationally.

Strong record of accomplishment soliciting major gifts ($50,000 and above) from individual donors and directing major gifts.

A preference for direct knowledge of top-tier development programs.

A preference for direct knowledge of successful fundraising practices.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work effectively in a complex institutional setting and develop and sustain productive and effective relationships with donors, faculty, colleagues, and senior departmental management.

Intellectual curiosity and commitment to the goals of a liberal arts education essential, as is the ability to articulate the case for support.

REQUIRED HOURS:

The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required with a typical year having 50 - 70 travel days to complete 144 substantive prospect visits annually. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

ANNUAL SALARY:

The annual salary for this role is between $69,000 and $85,000 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles.
