Provides engineering analysis and technical support to ensure continuing reliable operations of the electric power grid in compliance with NERC Standards, ERCOT Protocols and Market Guides. Provides electrical engineering analysis and technical support for the planning and operation of the electric power system. Implements appropriate system modeling, develops tools and procedures to monitor and control the system, performs system studies, analyzes simulated or actual operating results, develops solutions to current or future system issues, and appropriately reports findings and recommendations.
JOB DUTIES
Understands the basic principles, theories and concepts related to the profession and learns how to apply them within the ERCOT culture.
Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
Performs engineering studies including power flow, voltage security, and/or dynamic stability analysis
Runs appropriate scenarios and input variations to result in robust results, analyzes study accuracy and assigns confidence metrics, helps formulate conclusions and recommendations, prepares reports and presentations
Develops and documents operating plans, procedures and limits that allow the reliable and efficient operation of the system
Performs and/or reviews performance of resource qualification testing and performance evaluation
Analyzes system control performance and provides tuning and other modifications to maintain reliable operations, including analysis for development of ancillary service requirements and quantities
Assists in the preparation of operations reports for management, NERC, ERCOT, and other entities
Gathers and analyzes information on operating conditions and events, helps formulate conclusions and improvement recommendations and assists in preparing reports
Supports development and performance of advanced applications for operations, including State Estimator, Voltage Security Analysis, Load and renewables Forecast, Contingency Analysis, Power Flow, and Transient Stability Analysis
Develops and deploys situational awareness and system monitoring applications and tools for operations, management, and external entities
Provide 24/7 support to the ERCOT Control Room through On-Call rotation.
Contributes to specific objectives and outcomes as directed.
Level 1
Works under the direction of a senior level engineer or supervisor/manager to complete departmental goals and assignments
Performs all work according to applicable rules and regulations including regulatory requirements and organization policies and procedures
Learns how to use and develop software tools that enhance system reliability and departmental/organizational efficiencies
Under direct supervision, participates in teams to obtain input, address comments and perform studies
Level 2 & 3
May provide on the job training or help oversee the work of other engineers/analysts
May act as mentor and advisor to less experienced engineers/analysts
Typically works independently on assignments and projects
Participates in multifunctional teams to obtain input, address comments and perform studies
Assists in developing tools, processes and procedures that enhance system reliability and departmental/organizational efficiencies
Participates with other ERCOT departments to select and implement system changes as needed
Senior Level: includes all of the above in addition to:
Serves as a technical Subject Matter Expert for the department.
Makes independent decisions except in instances of unusually complex engineering scenarios.
Works on the most complex engineering issues where analysis of situations requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Has the ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
May coordinate, provide presentations and participate in stakeholder meetings with ERCOT personnel, Market Participants and industry Regulatory agencies.
Fosters and leverages strong working relationships with team and other internal departments.
Lends professional expertise to guide projects and help teammates assigned by manager.
Acts as mentor and advisor to less experienced engineers/analysts.
Leads multifunctional teams to obtain input, address comments and perform studies.
Demonstrates skills as an expert user of power system software applications and tools, spreadsheet programs, and database programs.
Maintains knowledge of emerging trends and industry best practices.
Engineer Level 1:
No minimum work experience required.
Engineer Level 2:
Minimum 1 year experience as a power system engineer or similar type role
Experience within the electric utility industry preferred
Engineer Level 3:
Minimum 3 years’ experience as a power system engineer or similar type role
Experience within the electric utility industry preferred
Engineer Sr. Level:
Minimum 5 years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role within the electric utility industry.
EDUCATION (All Levels)
Bachelor's Degree: Electrical Engineering or related field (Required)
or a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge to a major in such fields is required
CERTIFICATION
PE Professional Engineer (Preferred)
NERC Certification as a Reliability Coordinator is preferred or must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
The level will be determined by the candidate's level of experience that is identified.

Serves as the recognized technical expert for the department within and outside the organization
Provides on-the-job training, mentoring or oversight of the work of other engineers/analysts as required
Responds to executive and management inquiries and special reporting requests
Collaborates with other ERCOT departments to select and implement system changes as needed
Communicates results of analyses to appropriate stakeholders, including maintaining regular communication with the management team, providing relevant information to ensure compliance with all applicable requirements
Examines, analyzes, and determines efficiency improvements for departmental and organizational processes and procedures
Serves as the departmental representative on cross-functional teams, proactively providing technical, business, and policy guidance
Serves as quality assurance and best practices resource within and outside of the department
Networks with key contacts within and outside the electric utility industry Builds strong professional relationships both internally and externally.
Leads the work of projects and audits as assigned by management
May prepare reports and presentations to stakeholder bodies, the ERCOT Board of Directors and regulatory agencies, including preparing testimony
Experience Required for the different levels:

WORK LOCATION:
This position is Hybrid. Employees will be required to be on-site in Taylor, TX at least 2-3 days per week, or more, as needed based on the business needs as determined by management
On-site schedules are flexible or may be rotated based on business needs as determined by the Manager
Remote work is required to be performed from your Texas residence.
Employees may opt to work on-site more than required or 100% of the time
