The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is seeking a Family Peer Advocate to join our team. This position is a terrific opportunity for someone to gain additional experience and make a difference in the lives of our clients.

For over 45 forty-five years, our organization has provided mental health and holistic services in northern Manhattan for families, children, adolescents, and other adults including the elderly in a supportive and caring environment. We also have an out-patient and residential substance abuse program as well as a Therapeutic Preschool for 3-5 year olds.

Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center is a Certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Family Peer Advocate

Location; Early Childhood Services

Hours: Monday - Friday, 35 hrs./wk.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

•Conducting outreach to families to engage them in family peer advocacy as part of implementation of the agency's Project LAUNCH grant to enhance and expand our clinical response to early childhood mental health and developmental issues

•Providing information and referrals to participating families

•Working with families to discern their strengths, needs, and priorities

•Fostering effective parent-professional partnership and promoting the practice of family-driven and youth-guided approaches.

•Providing 1:1 assistance to help families connect to and participate in services

•Accompanying parents to meetings to assure their voice is heard

•Increasing parents' feelings of self-efficacy

•Reducing stigma and feelings of isolation

•Serving as members of child and family planning teams

•Helping families identify goals and track progress

•Supporting families to develop 'informal' networks of support

•Participating as the FPA in specific evidence-based treatment models

•Empowering parents by increasing their knowledge and skills

•Coaching in constructive self-advocacy skills

•Coaching in effective parenting strategies

•Initiating and supporting parent support and skills groups

•Helping families learn about special education services, procedures, and rights

•Serving as cultural brokers within organizations and systems

•Helping families understand mental health diagnoses, medication, and treatment options

Skills:

•Great communication skills

•Conflict resolution skills

•Bilingual in Spanish preferred

Amount of Travel: 50% of the time; hybrid remote/on-site

Salary range: $50,000

Hours per day or week: 1 FTE/40 hours

Requirements

Qualifications:

•Have lived experience with the challenges faced by the populations we serve, specifically with trauma and the challenges experienced by caretakers

•Have a high school diploma or GED (or document comparable skills)

•Complete the Family Peer Advocate Credential or Provisional Credential preferred, but paid training opportunities available for otherwise qualified candidates with the required lived experience
