Research Scientist in Environmental Health School of Public Health

Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) has a long history and national reputation of interdisciplinary research to address the health effects of climate change. We seek to recruit a research scientist to contribute to multiple grant-funded projects across the theme of climate, health, and sustainability at BUSPH Center for Climate and Health. Projects include studies of indoor environmental quality, sustainability, and student health in elementary schools, health impacts of school bus electrification, climate hazard resilience in environmental justice and vulnerable communities, and modeling health and energy tradeoffs of climate adaptation interventions.
The research scientist will be expected to devote 75% of their time leading research with Dr. Patricia Fabian, and the remaining 25% of their time to collaborating on other projects in this space with faculty, staff, or students affiliated with the Center for Climate and Health and/or developing their own research agenda under this broad theme. The research scientist will author or co-author manuscripts, lead or contribute to applications for funding and mentor junior members of the team. The balance of work on specific projects is expected to shift over time commensurate with availability of funding. This work is currently funded by a mix of grants from Barr Foundation and National Institutes of Health, with several additional grant applications pending.
The research scientist will have a PhD or equivalent in environmental health, indoor air, health impact modeling, epidemiologic methods or statistical modeling. They will have advanced skills in R programming or data science methods, and have demonstrated expertise in working with high dimensional spatiotemporal data. Interest in actionable research, environmental health disparities, and transdisciplinary work.
Essential Functions
Lead or collaborate on research related to climate, sustainability, indoor air, health, and building energy. This includes conducting data analyses, authoring or co-authoring presentations and manuscripts, draft reports, and mentoring and collaborating with others on the team - 75%
Lead or collaborate on other projects broadly related to climate, health and sustainability. This includes developing new projects in collaboration with other faculty, staff, or students; and enabling the work of others in this space - 25%
Required Skills
PhD/doctorate in environmental health, exposure assessment, data science, environmental epidemiology, exposure science, biostatistics, environmental or public policy, or related fields
Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to meet deadlines;
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
Demonstrated publication record;
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
Good communication and writing skills.

Required Experience

EDUCATION AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
* HS Diploma (Associates degree or certificate in applied science or science-related technology or other related field preferred).
* Proficient with Microsoft Office Products
* Understanding of the processes involved in the production of dry sausage products
* Ability to use and read measurement instruments
* SAP Knowledge
Work Environment:
* Work can be performed within a manufacturing plant environment with noise, extreme temperatures, and significant movement of powered equipment, people and conveyor (may depend on the role).
* Work conditions are typical of a plant environment.
* This role does not require any domestic travel
* Position requires the physical agility to perform continuous lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, stretching/reaching, use hands or fingers, talk, hear, feel objects, tools, controls and standing/walking on concrete flooring.
* Position requires the physical ability to stand/walk for the duration of work hours.
