The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) has offices and laboratory space on both the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) campus in La Jolla and at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility on Point Loma. It is part of SIO's Oceans and Atmosphere (OA) Section with multidisciplinary programs of scientific research including: ocean acoustics, bioacoustics, seafloor geophysics, signal processing, ocean optics and underwater imaging, air-sea interaction and surface waves, upper-ocean physics, and ocean chemistry.

MPL has contracts & grants with federal agencies, industry, other Universities and nonprofits, and various state agencies. MPL's research programs are both theoretical and applied, The MPL machine shop at Point Loma supports MPL and SIO research programs fabricating unique and complex instrumentation in support of exploratory technological development appropriate to applied research programs.

DESCRIPTION The Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking to hire a Staff Research Associate 2.

The Staff Research Associate shall be responsible for general laboratory management, cleanliness and orderliness, ensuring a safe organized, clean and operational laboratory.

Other duties include: Place and track orders and expenses with assistance from business office fiscal management staff.

Assist with the set-up, operation, maintenance, repair and installation of instrumentation both at sea and on shore.

Assist in training of student assistants and new lab personnel.

Under supervision, perform high precision quantitative analyses of oceanographic properties such as salinity, CO2 parameters, oxygen, and nutrients.

Independently prepare equipment and chemicals for research expeditions.

Instrument development work with limited or no supervision that may include mechanical and/or electrical design and fabrication.

QUALIFICATIONS Undergraduate degree in physical or marine sciences or other relevant field

Demonstrated independent problem-solving capabilities

Ability to perform standard repetitive laboratory techniques

Ability in following step-wise experimental protocols

Demonstrated oral and written communications skills

Strong interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of people exercising initiative and diplomacy

Ability to read, interpret, and apply protocols in conducting research

Demonstrated experience using physical and chemical methods in a laboratory setting.

Ability to independently perform various tasks in a phased manner at different times upon the instruction of the supervisor.

Proven ability to accurately maintain records (written and computer).

Demonstrated ability to follow established protocols and lab procedures, with some direction.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS Must be able to obtain a valid CA Driver's License.

Must be willing and able to participate on research cruises of up to 2 months duration, for a total of up to 6 months annually.

Must possess a valid US passport to travel globally without restriction.

Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Able to travel locally to on-site meetings and conferences and to other buildings at SIO La Jolla campus and Point Loma.

Must have access to reliable transportation.

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
