About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

This position directs and administers the design implementation, management, installation and inspection of landscape operations for assigned areas. This position will be responsible for insuring assigned work and scheduled functions to be carried out and completed on time. Responsible for all turf areas within the university acreage on the main campus and east campus including sports turf.

Plan, direct and control all policies, procedures, operations, equipment, and personnel in the management, installation and care of facility landscape areas

Keep all of the SMU campus and several other properties owned by SMU managed at APPA Levels 1 and 2.

Oversee contracted vendors and in-house staff for turf management including sports fields along with oversight of tree, shrubs, & flower bed management.

Essential Functions:

Oversees the daily work assignments of subordinate staff as scheduled; reviews work to ensure that work is completed as assigned and in a timely manner; provides teaching, assistance, instruction and directions as needed of landscape vendors/contractors and sports turf staff.

Reviews job performance of subordinates and participates in performance appraisals; disciplines subordinates as needed following established policies and procedures; participates in the interviewing and hiring of subordinates.

Assist in planning landscape programs for the facility; consults with administration and management relative to planting plans; makes suggestions and implements program. Includes but not limited to directing, administrating, design implementation, management installation and inspection of landscape operations.

Responsible for the oversight of the development, implementation and planning of all seasonal flower beds and ornamental shrubbery. Oversee the planning and implementation of planting displays in the gardens and lawns.

Ability to manage CMMS/IWMS by opening, documenting and closing work orders. Responsible for making sure teams self-identify work request as needed.

Oversee the planning of various landscape management programs which include safe pesticide control, safe fertilizer and safe pruning practices. Monitor and manage the health of mature trees on campus. Fertilize and properly care for sick trees on campus or trees impacted by construction. Manage green grass year round on the Boulevard, Main Quad, Clements Hall lawn, and the Law Quad.

Oversee the management of all trees on campus. Keep canopies managed at 8’ to 10’ off the ground. Keep all deadwood removed from trees. Monitor Oak Wilt. Manage the health of newly planted trees.

Performs daily campus safety walks. Review and inspect work in progress to insure completion on schedule. Coordinate support as requested for special events and meetings.

Determine fiscal requirements of the department and prepare budgetary recommendations.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidate with bachelor's degree is preferred.

A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the trade field including five (5) years of supervisory experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate with knowledge of horticulture, forestry or a related field is preferred. Candidate with computer literacy is required. Knowledge of excel, word and must demonstrate the ability to learn computerized work order software. Candidate must also possess the ability to prepare routine reports, records and order supplies.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Evening and weekend work may be required to perform the assigned duties and to be able to respond to emergencies.
