Experience and Education

Graduate of JRCERT accredited program in radiation therapy or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in healthcare field and seven (7) years progressive experience as Radiation Therapy Technologist (RTT) or Associate’s degree and 9 years experience at level of Radiation Therapist I, II, III or equivalent.

Three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Licensure as Medical Radiologic Technologist by the Texas Medical Board.

Must have passed the registry exam as a Radiologic Technologist by American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) and have a valid Texas license.

BLS Certification required, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).

Job Duties

Works under moderate supervision to provide highly specialized, technical, and cognitive skills related to administration of prescribed course of radiation therapy and supervision of personnel responsible for diagnosis and care of patients within Radiation Therapy.

Supervision of a team of Radiation Therapists and Radiation Therapy Techs; responsible for recommending hiring, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions in coordination with the Clinic and Technical Manager.

Disseminates and practices departmental and institutional policies and procedures;

Recommends new departmental policies and procedures.

Assists in student supervision and clinical instruction and arrangement of departmental in-services and educational programs.

In coordination with lead therapists responsible for patient scheduling, assuring that personnel numbers are sufficient to assure delivery of safe and orderly patient treatments.

Develops weekly and rotational schedules for staff, as well as weekly call schedules.

Facilitates teamwork, staff development and staff satisfaction through planned group processes, including orientation of new team members, setting of expectations and establishment of competencies.

Assures that all team members are in compliance with departmental and institutional training requirements.

Recommends budgeting and provides justification of additional staff as needed to meet treatment requirements.

Prepares and educates patients for radiation therapy treatments; Administers cutting edge radiotherapy treatment and monitors patient during treatment.

Demonstrates effective leadership performance by supporting lead therapists in their work in the following areas:

Adequate time slots provided for daily treatments Anticipation and resolution of machine coverage issues

Aptitude to manage patient throughput with a pace consistent to the daily schedule

Skill to meet special scheduling requests/needs for patients without compromising the schedules of other patients

Provides input at meetings on improvements or changes

Effective time management of self and team members assigned to machine Input on staffing models and/or weekly schedules

Coverage of staff in supervisors’ absence

Assures radiation safety measures for patients and personnel are observed.

Tracks, records, and compiles all clinical research data of patients following departmental and IRB policies.

Discusses technical problems with faculty and staff to suggest corrections and/or solutions.

Participates in departmental leadership activities such as development of strategic plans, projects related to new technologies and facilities.

Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions:

(a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients;

(b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants;

(c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records);

or (d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Work requires use of considerable judgment in application for radiotherapy on complex and cutting edge treatment machines, practices and policies to work problems, organization and administration of clinical activities.

Ability to ensure adherence to policies and procedures of university such as FLSA, salary guidelines, accounting regulations, and internal controls policy.

Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of internal and external contacts.

Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily by the linac machines in the therapy console area.
