Communications Manager

Reporting to the Director of Communication, the Communications Manager works collaboratively across the organization to develop and implement communication strategies that align with BHSB’s vision, mission and goals. The position is responsible for developing, managing and tracking BHSB’s internal and external communications activities. The Communications Manager serves as a key project manager for the Policy and Communications Department and works directly with different teams within BHSB to support and develop communications efforts.

Policy and Communications uses advocacy and communications strategies to advance evidence-based practices, policy reforms, and mobilize community action. The department manages internal and external communications and government and community relations for BHSB, implements public education and advocacy campaigns to create positive change, and actively engages with community members to identify prevention opportunities, promote resiliency, and ensure that BHSB decision making is well informed by the community. BHSB participates in several coalitions and collaborates with a range of partners to advance policies and practices that support behavioral health and wellness. The department has a dedicated provider relations contact to assist providers with getting information and support from BHSB.

Essential Functions

Manage the development of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, e-newsletters, brochures, giveaways and fact sheets. Ensure all content is accessible.

Plan, develop and manage all content across BHSB’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Use analytics to inform social media strategy. Work with the policy team to develop social media content to support advocacy efforts.

Manage and regularly update BHSB’s website.

Lead email marketing includes composing and sending email blasts, managing email lists and tracking engagement.

Support the development of design, messaging, and strategic implementation of public awareness campaigns, including campaigns promoting local behavioral health crisis hotlines, harm reduction interventions and community resilience.

Ensure consistent BHSB branding across all departments by maintaining BHSB’s style guide, developing and managing branded templates and providing communications support to staff across departments as needed.

Participate in the development of competitive procurements for communications activities and public awareness campaigns, including defining the scope of work, eligibility requirements, project deliverables, and budget and supporting the identification of Review Committee members.

Serve as the program lead for communications contracts:

Develop scope of work, deliverables, and budget for BHSB contract and participate in the contract workflow process.

Regularly monitor and assess vendor performance and progress toward contract deliverables.

In collaboration with BHSB staff, provide support and guidance to vendors to ensure contract deliverables are met and within budget.

Collaborate with members of BHSB’s Accountability Team to support continuous quality improvement, as needed.

Develop news articles and interviews that demonstrate the impact of BHSB’s staff and partners.

Collaborate with BHSB staff and external partners to plan and execute events, including BHSB’s annual recovery month event for the public.

Support BHSB staff in managing communications and registration for meetings and training.

Contribute to and manage the development of BHSB’s annual impact report, including content development, layout and design, photography and imagery, and report release.

Other Work effectively and collaboratively with others, both internally and externally to BHSB.

Uphold and operationalize the values of BHSB, which are Integrity, Equity, Innovation, Collaboration and Quality.

Consistently work to apply a lens of equity, inclusion and anti-racism.

Serve as part of BHSB’s disaster response team as needed, in any capacity that is needed.

To perform assigned work functions, this position and those it supervises may have access to protected health information (PHI). It is expected that the employee will operate from a place of integrity and assume an ethical obligation to protect the security and confidentiality of all PHI in accordance with BHSB’s policies.

An offer of employment for this position at BHSB is contingent upon the results of a thorough background check which will require prior authorization from the candidate.

Experience and Education Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public health, or other related field

3-5 years or more of communications or public relations experience, preferably in a non-profit or government organization.

Experience using social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; experience with social media tools such as Hootsuite.

Strong writing skills, with ability to be attentive to nuances when drafting various communications materials. Ability to communicate complex issues in an accessible way.

Commitment to equity and anti-racism. Ability to apply an equity lens to all communications materials.

Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including service providers, consumers and community partners.

Strong project management and time management skills.

Ability to be versatile, quick-thinking and able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Experience with Word Press and/or website construction and maintenance required.

Experience with Canva and Adobe Suite, preferred.

Knowledge of behavioral health care and harm reduction preferred.

Ability to interact in a hybrid/virtual environment.

Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Supervisory Requirements : This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

BHSB's compensation strategy is based on our values and culture and is a step in our work toward becoming a justice-oriented, antiracist and inclusive organization. The organization offers its employees a competitive compensation package which includes base pay, comprehensive benefits plan and equitable, hybrid, family friendly work environment and practices.

This means that starting salaries are based on the requirements of each job and are non-negotiable, that the organization is not favoring people who are comfortable asking for a salary/hourly rate increase. The starting hourly/ annualized salary rate for this position is $72,000.

The benefits plan includes comprehensive Medical and HRA, Dental and Vision coverage, as well as a choice of 4 FSA plans and an employee paid Legal benefit. BHSB offers employer paid life insurance, short-term and long-term disability as well as a 403(b) plan with employer contribution, generous PTO and 13 days paid holiday. Medical plan participants receive a $5,000/$10,000 debit card to cover eligible deductible and copay expenses, depending on chosen coverage.
