A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.
Position Overview
The research engineer's primary responsibility is to support fundamental R&D's material research programs that are associated with internal technology development with the primary role of assembling and testing small electrochemical vehicles to evaluate battery materials. These programs are keys to ensuring A123's advancement of high energy density material technologies. Primary job activities include conducting experimental testing in a controlled environment such as dry room and glove box, preparing and optimizing processes, designs and prototype cells according to established procedures, and collaborating with program management to ensure information is clearly articulated to the R&D team. Additional responsibilities include cell testing, data collection, test procedure modification, data analysis and presentation, updating SOPs, chemical analysis and maintaining shared laboratory space.
Primary responsibilities
* Prepare and optimize slurry formulations for battery materials.* Assemble and test electrochemical test vehicles including coin cells and pouch cells to evaluate the half-cell and full-cell performance of different battery materials and formulations.* Conduct materials and analytical characterization, including SEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, TGA and ICP.* Conduct electrochemical cell teardown and failure mode analysis.* Assist in transferring laboratory findings and technologies to pilot and production scale.* Process, record and track test data using certain software tools.* Perform other functions as required to support R&D.
Qualifications
* Bachelor or Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field preferred.* Knowledge and hands-on experience with battery slurries and electrode preparation.* Knowledge and hands-on experience with materials and analytical characterizations, such as SEM, XRD, TGA and ICP.* Knowledge and hands-on experience with battery cell assembly and electrochemical testing. Experience with Maccor battery cyclers is a plus.* Proficient in Excel, Word, and other PC based software.* Experience working with glove boxes and dry room is preferred.* Drives for results - The passion to set and meet high standards of performance.* Drives for accountability - The ability to establish clear, measurable goals and deliver on commitments.
