The Daniels College of Business is one of the largest degree-granting colleges at the University of Denver. Daniels enrolls approximately 2,300 students and includes several schools and departments ranging from finance, real estate and construction management, accountancy, and hospitality management to business information and analytics, management, marketing, and business ethics and legal studies. The College is also home to several innovative centers and programs including Entrepreneurship@DU, the Sales Leadership Center (SLC), the Bailey Program for Family Enterprise, and the Consumer Insights and Business Innovation Center (CiBiC), among others.

Position Summary

The Opportunity

The Director of Development, Leadership Annual Giving in the Daniels College of Business (Daniels) reports directly to the Executive Director for Development for Daniels and is part of the Development team in DU Advancement. Joining a team of six established advancement professionals in the College (the Executive Director, three major gifts officers, a coordinator, and one alumni engagement officer), the Director will be part of a dynamic, collaborative, and seasoned team working toward an ambitious campaign goal.

The Director of Development will focus on building the base of annual support and major gift pipeline through direct solicitation of gifts at the Leadership Annual Giving level ($1,000-$49,999) and oversight of Annual Giving activities specific to Daniels including direct mail and email. The Director may manage part-time staff or student employee(s) in support of Annual Giving efforts at Daniels. The Director of Development will collaborate with Advancement leadership and senior university administrators to determine and implement annual giving fundraising priorities, establish short- and long-term strategies, and monitor progress toward goals. Metrics may include oversight of the AG and LAG gift bands, face-to-face visits, solicitations, and qualifications.

The campus-wide Advancement team is highly collaborative in its work and the Director will be expected to build and foster relationships with colleagues and campus partners.

Essential Functions

Manage a portfolio of 100-250 LAG prospects through active solicitation through in-person visits, calls, and digital engagement with a focus on immediate use gifts.

Focus on acquisition, reactivation, renewal and upgrading gifts that are given annually, as well as securing multi-year commitments.

Develop a working knowledge of the Daniels College of Business and key funding priorities to articulate a compelling case for support and match stakeholder interests with funding priorities.

Responsible for annually raising $1.5M+ from the combined Annual Giving and Leadership Annual Giving levels (all gifts under $50,000).

Identify potential major and planned giving prospects ($50,000+) through qualification activities to assess capacity and affinity.

Programmatic Responsibilities

Maintain annual giving society, the Daniels Dean’s Circle, and contribute to annual and leadership annual giving stewardship efforts.

Engage with the Daniels Alumni Advisory Board and school and department advisory boards to grow the base of support through individual participation and peer-to-peer efforts.

Laise with Advancement’s central annual giving team on Daniels solicitations as a content expert and strategic partner.

Leadership and University Citizenship

In partnership with the Dean and the Executive Director of Development, establish Annual Giving and Leadership Annual Giving fundraising priorities for Daniels.

Serve as a prominent member of the Daniels Advancement team by participating in group strategy discussions, providing project leadership, sharing information with colleagues and contributing to the achievement of the overall goals of the College.

Engage in Advancement goal-setting processes for fundraising, engagement, and stewardship.

Effectively and responsibly steward budgetary and other resources to advance the Daniels College of Business and the University of Denver.

Serve as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based advancement functions, and other campus colleagues, to foster strategic, effective, and collaborative fundraising practices.

Model “One DU” leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to create, maintain, and refine systems for growing the donor base at Annual Giving and Leadership Annual Giving levels.

Demonstrated ability to close Annual Gifts and Leadership Annual Gifts, including multi-year pledges, in a relationship-based culture.

Experience with philanthropically focused volunteer boards and councils, including goal setting, tracking, and reporting.

Demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, solicit, and steward gifts from individual donors.

Demonstrated ability to form and fully leverage cross-functional teams of colleagues, volunteers, and academic/administrative leaders to represent the interests of Daniels’ donors.

Ability to represent the University of Denver, and its major initiatives and units, in a variety of capacities.

Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, prioritize assignments, and manage time effectively.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, and University leadership.

Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the University and community.

Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills.

Fluency in data management and analysis.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

(Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification.)

5 years of paid fundraising experience.

Experience securing multi-year commitments from individual donors by strategically managing a portfolio and directly soliciting gifts.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience planning and executing successful annual giving strategies and campaigns, including mail, phone, and digital strategies.

Prior experience in constituent or donor management software (for example, Advance or Blackbaud).

Experience working in an institution of higher education or similarly complex non-profit organization.

Standard office environment.

Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Eligible for hybrid work.

Some nights and weekend event attendance.

Travel locally to meet donors.

Physical Activities

Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.

Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., some nights and weekends as required

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 13.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $95,000-$110,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
