Job Description Job Description Global Dynamics is currently seeking a Endoscopy Technician to join our team and work at a state of the art government facility.

Duties:

The Contractor shall provide services within the scope of their competencies, the applicable duties provided in the basic contract, and the following: Endoscopy Technician.

Assist physicians, nurses, and hospital corpsmen in the preparation, recovery, and performance of invasive Gastroenterological procedures.

Prepare patients for invasive procedures, including preoperative data collection, providing patient education and information before and after procedures. Start intravenous lines as directed by physician or nurse. Monitor vital signs during and after invasive procedures. Records required documentation before, during and after procedures.

Assist the physician with invasive endoscopic procedures. Sets up, cleans, disinfects, stores, and troubleshoots endoscopic equipment. Sets up computer-based equipment to accept procedure data and generate procedure reports.

Handle endoscopic accessories, including light sources, image generating and retrieval systems (some of which are computer based) and tissue retrieval devices (such as biopsy forceps and polypectomy snares). Apply the techniques of therapeutic endoscopy, including electrocoagulation and injection hemostasis. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment to ensure proper functioning, ensures that adequate maintenance occurs, and ensures adequate supply of consumable equipment.

Handle biopsy tissue and other material obtained from patients during procedures, including proper recording and transport to the laboratory. Interact directly with the Department of Pathology to assure that retrieval is timely and complete.

Perform meticulous high-level disinfection to endoscopes and other medical devices per strict manufacturer and industry standard guidelines.

Restocks endoscopy supplies in the endoscopy rooms at the end of the day as well as stocks supplies in storage rooms for later use upon arrival of a new shipment.

The Contractor shall assist the adult and pediatric Gastroenterologist (GI) or the Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic and emergency procedures. Serves as first assistant to the physician in esophagogastro-duodenoscopies (EGD), colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopies, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placements, push enteroscopy, anoscopies, small bowel push enteroscopies, peritoneoscopies (PEG), liver biopsies, and single balloon enteroscopies, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS), paracentesis.

The Contractor shall assist with all types of dilations (i.e., Maloney dilations, wire guided Savary-Gillard dilations, and endoscopic balloon dilations). Assists with esophageal or colonic stent placements. Assists with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies. Independently sets up and performs Capsule Endoscopy (esophageal or small bowel), and 24-hour PH studies. Sets up and operates the monitoring and recording devices. Independently performs esophageal manometry, which requires specific training and knowledge of esophageal anatomy and physiology, as well as basic ability to interpret testing. Calibrates equipment as necessary to perform procedure.

The Contractor shall prepare a summary of the test results and forwards the report to the physician. Serves as first assistant to the physician in various specialized therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) with possible therapies such as biliary stone extraction, biliary stent placement, and biliary drainage tube placements. This requires specific training and knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the biliary system including its structures as they relate to specific disease processes involving the gallbladder and biliary drainage system. This also requires specific skill to apply this knowledge in adapting instruments such as sphincterotomes, wires and balloons in non-routine diagnostic and treatment procedures.

The Contractor shall coordinate with the Department of Radiology personnel to secure X-ray and fluoroscopy rooms. Also serves as first assistant to the physician in the specialized treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding. Evaluates the patient’s condition and determines the proper treatment procedure, technique, and compatible instrument adjustments. Independently sets up the electrosurgery unit and/or Argon/Plasma coagulator for therapies.

The Contractor shall interpret the physician’s instructions. As required for certain procedures, draws medications, mixes solutions, injects dyes, reads graphic printouts, and sets up needles, syringes, catheters, and/or balloons. This requires a basic knowledge of pharmacology including the classification and administration of drugs, patient responses, and common doses.

The Contractor shall recognize potential problems with patient and has the knowledge and skill to initiate corrective action or start emergency Basic Life Support (BLS) procedures and monitor vital signs including pulse oximetry.

The Contractor shall maintain, clean, and prepare equipment for use. All of the endoscopic procedures require thorough knowledge and use of specialized equipment and instruments peculiar to surgery and gastroenterology. Monitors equipment and acts, without instruction, to compensate for adverse reactions. In liaison with medical maintenance, and company representatives, makes sure proper in-service training is done and that equipment functions properly.

The Contractor shall receive and position patients for various endoscopic procedures. Instructs patients on initial preparation and provides an explanation of the procedures to allay fears and secure their cooperation. Starts intravenous (IV) catheters.

The Contractor shall select, sets up, adjusts, and operates equipment for designated procedures. Calibrates equipment as necessary. Must have knowledge of video-processors with narrowband imaging, light sources, and videoscopes. Inputs data into an automated system.

The Contractor shall keep abreast of the latest technical changes in the field of gastroenterology through self- directed research of literature, continuing education courses, and participation in meetings.

The Contractor shall move the mobile procedure cart, equipment cart and portable monitor to the Emergency Room Department, Intensive Care Unit or Operating Room, preparing the equipment for operation and directly assisting the gastroenterology physician in the procedure.

The Contractor shall position and drape the patient according to clinic standard operating procedures. Monitor the patient's vital signs before, during and after procedure(s). Insert an oral “bite block” at the beginning of upper GI procedures to protect the instrument and the patient during the procedure. Maintain an adequate airway, provide oral suctioning as needed. Observe and monitor the patient carefully. Recognize potential problems with the patient during the procedure. Alert the physician and Registered Nurse; and as directed, take immediate corrective action (increase IV fluids, increase oxygen flow rate, and initiate.

The Contractor shall prepare and organize the procedure room. Responsible for maintaining correct inventory according to standards. Performs all setup of equipment, check instruments/equipment for completeness and proper functioning prior to beginning procedure. Must be able to troubleshoot equipment during procedures as necessary.

The Contractor shall cleanse and sanitize all reusable procedure equipment after each case according to standard operating procedures and government regulations. This includes initial pre- cleansing of endoscopes and equipment in the procedure room, detailed handwashing of endoscopes per SOP's and manufacturer guidelines. Operates MEDIVATORS and OER-Pro endoscope re-processor to High Level Disinfection (HLD).

The Contractor shall ensure adherence to HLD and sterile technique and other established safety measures to prevent patient infection and cross-contamination. Cleanse and disinfects all reusable procedure scopes and equipment after each case according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Instructions for Use (IFU) and regulations. This includes pre-cleansing, transportation, manual cleaning, and operation of Medivator and OER-Pro endoscope re-processors.

The Contractor shall perform preventive maintenance on equipment and re-processors. Performs daily maintenance of HLD machines and equipment to include changing filters, monitoring disinfectant potency, and installation of disinfectant and cleaning solutions per manufacturer guidelines.

The Contractor shall dispose of biohazardous materials per policies and regulations.

The Contractor shall perform basic maintenance of equipment as needed and/or send equipment to a designated repair center.

The Contractor shall maintain correct stock of endoscopic supplies and order all GI supplies, electronic/paper forms, special equipment, and linen.

The Contractor shall keep abreast of techniques and procedures in gastroenterology and health care activities through training and in-service classes given within the medical center and/or attends approved job-related training sessions that may be offered outside the hospital for government employees. Provides staff training as necessary.

The Contractor shall provide technical assistance in other clinics (e.g., General Surgery), when directed. Travels to hospital units to perform procedures on higher acuity patients as needed.

The Contractor shall coordinate with staff members (OR Nurse, Anesthesia, and X-ray Technicians) of the operating room to prepare for procedures. Prepares equipment for procedure.

The Contractor shall establish and maintain a variety of files and records related to gastroenterology activities and functions. On occasion, may be required to schedule and coordinate Ambulatory Procedure Visits (APV) through the electronic health record (EHR). Prepares examination reports, equipment status and utilization, workload, supply status and consumption, and related matters. Utilizes automated information systems (computer hardware and software) in completing the assigned duties. Utilizes the ENDOSOFT and other computer programs to catalogue/store patient procedures and data relevant to procedures (number of procedures per month, physician workload, etc.). Scans reports into hospital based EHR system.

The Contractor shall catalogue, and label specimens as directed and ensures proper specimen mediums are utilized. Ensures laboratory orders have been entered into EHR and delivers specimens to laboratory.

The Contractor shall be responsible to take call as needed, typically on a month or bi-monthly bases for period of one week. While on-call, will be available to return to hospital within one hour for emergent and urgent various types of endoscopy procedures.

The Contractor shall assist with pre and post-operative assessment and care of patients including, but not limited to IV catheter insertion, charting, and placing physiological monitors on patient.

The Contractor shall assist with daily set-up of unit including quality control checks, hanging IV bags, daily cleaning, disinfection, and upkeep of the unit.

The Contractor shall resupply rooms and unit with supplies and equipment as needed.

Qualification:

Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians.

Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-Surgery (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or possess a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) certification as a surgical technician and/or operating room technician.

One year of experience as a Surgical Technician or Operating Room Technician after graduation.

Must have a minimum of 12 months of experience in gastroenterology services (endoscopy and colonoscopy) within the last 24 months.

U.S. Citizen

Maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course. Certification cards must display the American Heart Association or Military Training Network emblem.

Read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently and maintain good communication skills with patients and other health care personnel.

Be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and capable of normal ambulation.
