BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY

Performs complex (journey-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Work involves installing, replacing, and maintaining electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Installs and repairs electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of machinery and equipment.

Inspects, tests, and troubleshoots electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.

Isolates/repairs/replaces defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements.

Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications.

Repairs magnetic starters and remote start-stop stations; operates and maintains high- and low-voltage switches; and installs rigid, thin wall, and flexible conduit.

Wires circuits and cleans and tightens low-voltage switch gears.

Plans the layout of electrical wiring to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes.

Determines operational minimum and maximum inventory levels.

Assists in the maintenance and renovation of electrical service.

May provide guidance to others.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK HOURS: Tuesday - Friday, 10 hours a day, 40 hours a week

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (GED) is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION: Vocational or special training in an electrical trade is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: One year of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment is required.

Experience using Microsoft Office (such as Outlook, Word, or Excel) is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience with commercial electrical systems is preferred.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE: Electrical License is preferred.

Valid driver's license is required. *If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.

The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

Upon hire with the State of Texas, males between the ages of 18 through 25 must provide proof of registration or exemption with the Selective Service. For further information, visit the Selective Service website at https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfVerification.aspx.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: general principles and theory of electricity, and of safety regulations;

the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems;

electrical, power production, and HVAC/R systems;

power production and high voltage systems;

building/electrical diagram usage;

transformer, switch and motor parts and operations;

state electrical safety practices; and

fire safety regulations.

Skill in: the use of tools and electronic maintenance;

troubleshooting situations to determine appropriate actions to resolve problems;

communicating effectively both orally and in writing; and

using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).

Ability to: make maintenance or electrical repairs;

follow preventative maintenance programs;

apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment;

interpret drawings, diagrams, and blueprints;

diagnose malfunctioning units;

maintain records;

effectively utilize information technology equipment, to include desktop computers, tablet computers, cell phones, and printers/scanners;

communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and

work in a military environment.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed in outdoor settings which may be hot, humid, dirty, cold, and in direct sunlight. Position will require incumbent to work in areas that are high off of the ground and/or in tight spaces. Work typically involves stooping, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, reaching, and crouching. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and materials that weigh up to 50 pounds. Work schedule is primarily 0630 - 1715, Tuesday thru Friday, but may require extended days if workload requires.
