Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I (EHSS I) (Laboratory Safety)
Location: New Orleans, LA
Summary
Assists with laboratory health and safety compliance programs and activities on all Tulane campuses. Assists with chemical fume hood inspection program, laboratory and art safety inspections, chemical purchasing approvals, and providing training and guidance on all laboratory safety issues. Performs duties relative to animal care/research safety. Participates in On-Call and Emergency Response Program for safety and health issues at Tulane. Assists other OEHS personnel as needed. This position is considered essential for certain campus emergencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, environmental health sciences, engineering, toxicology, occupational safety and health, or related sciences. • Basic knowledge of chemical and biological safety requirements and general workplace safety standards.
• Coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, environmental health sciences, engineering, toxicology, occupational safety and health, or related sciences. • Basic knowledge of chemical and biological safety requirements and general workplace safety standards. • Knowledge and/or the ability to learn to operate sampling or analytical equipment. • Basic knowledge of laboratory processes related to chemical and biomedical research or laboratory waste management. • Ability to recognize and work with technical chemical nomenclature and formulas. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet/database, and presentation software. • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed. • Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, plus the ability to exercise discretion, make informed decisions, and assist in emergency situations. • Ability to wear respiratory protection. • On call availability and willingness to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The position occasionally requires extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting and carrying. Use of personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, and the ability to work in extreme hot, cold or other restrictive or uncomfortable environments is also required.
Required Education and/or Experience • 1 year of experience working or volunteering in a laboratory or environmental health and safety related workplace.

Preferred Qualifications • Experience with laboratory processes and safety in a chemical or biomedical research laboratory setting. • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in chemistry, biology, environmental health science, environmental management, or other science or engineering related field. • Experience in handling hazardous chemicals or laboratory safety, environmental health and safety, or regulatory compliance. • Work experience in a university setting. Compensation Information This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 23PREM.
