The Prenatal Genetics Administrator provides support to a team of genetic counselors at the Prenatal Diagnostic Unit. They will also have an opportunity to shadow reproductive genetic counselors to learn more about the field of genetic counseling. Under the supervision of either a Board Certified/Board Eligible Genetic Counselor, a Clinical Geneticist, the Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine or the Director of Prenatal Diagnosis, the following duties will be performed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative tasks (scanning and copying medical documents or forms, sorting faxes of prenatal test results)
Serving as a liaison between genetic testing laboratories and genetic counselors including supplying necessary information to genetic laboratories and inquiring about genetic testing turnaround times
Replying to patient phone calls and patient gateway messages regarding carrier screening and reviewing negative carrier screen results
Sending out patient gateway messages to explain a patient’s carrier status and discuss follow up testing for their reproductive partner
Coordinating and ordering appropriate carrier screening for the reproductive partner
Tracking carrier screening results for the pregnant patient and their partner in an OB-wide carrier screening spreadsheet
Perform data entry of results into the medical record and assist in tracking genetics results
Maintain stock of testing kits, patient handouts and other supplies
Provide administrative support to GC colleagues to develop patient education materials
Perform all other duties or special projects that are unit specific and are appropriate to this level of position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a high school diploma.
Coursework, experience, and interest in genetics is a plus.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Knowledge of basic word processing/spreadsheet packages
Basic computer skills necessary to use database software
Medical terminology
Excellent attention to detail
Skills to work both independently and as a member of a team
Commitment to handling patient information in a confidential manner
Ability to complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner
Ability to seek advice from or refer related problems to appropriate staff
