The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government (YG) is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet.
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to- government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.
Position Summary
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Director of Health and Social Services. Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The Community Health Nurse (RN) practices in partnership with clients, families, the community, and social and healthcare partners. Utilizes a community focused approach, ensuring the delivery of client centered care to achieve and maintain maximum health through the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health and prevention, treatment and palliation of illness and injury, assessment of health status, planning and implementation of interventions and coordination of health services. This is a temporary position consisting of a six-month term, with the potential to become permanent.
Primary Responsibilities
Provides health promotion, disease prevention, education, assessment, counselling and consultation to individuals, groups, and communities.
Restores and promotes patient’s health by completing the nursing process.
Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members within YG and other organizations.
Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and their families.
Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and hospital or regulatory standards.
Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
Documents patient care services by charting patient and department records.
Maintains a cooperative relationship among heath care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods.
Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, calling for repairs, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
Maintains nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels.
Organizes and coordinates work plans for administrative support staff.
Monitors administration activities and functions to ensure adherence to established policies and procedures.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Director of Health and Social Services.
Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Specialized Nursing courses from a recognized program.
Current RN license and member in good standing with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
Nurse Practitioners are welcome to apply and will be compensated accordingly.
Minimum of 2 years of relevant Nursing experience.
Familiarity with Panorama and electronic medical charting system.
Recent experience working with children, youth, and families.
Successful completion of (or willing to complete) the BCCDC Immunization Competency Course for Registered Nurses.
Current certification (or willing to complete) the FNHA Immunization Competency Program.
Basic life support for healthcare providers.
Up-to-date immunizations and clear TB Test.
Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).
Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to collaborate with members of the healthcare team, providing leadership and personal/professional development conducting themself professionally.
Demonstrates behaviours consistent with the core values of YG, in support with Tofino General Hospital and other organizations like First Nations Health Authority, Island Health, Ministry of Health BC, and Health Canada.
Excellent knowledge of health and wellness programs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, proficiency with computers, and maintain accurate records, documents, and reports. Previous experience with electronic charting systems (EMR) would be an asset.
Demonstrates understanding of health promotion, epidemiology, disease and injury, population health, community development and determinants of health.
Demonstrates knowledge of community health practice, chronic disease management, elder care and palliative nursing practice within a client-centered approach.
Strong awareness of the impacts resulting from colonization, assimilation, the historic relationship between Indigenous communities and provincial/federal governments, and the legacy of intergenerational trauma.
Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional, and helpful.
Excellent computer skills with the ability to work in a Network environment.
Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture, and protocols.
