Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Boston, MA, United States

Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Suffolk University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Computer Science at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2024. The Department is interested in recruiting a teacher-scholar with a teaching and research focus that would complement or expand our department's current offerings.

Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching and scholarly potential including a research agenda and plans for peer-reviewed publications. Applications in all research areas will be considered, although we are particularly interested in candidates with a specialization in the areas of data science, machine learning, network security, or software systems. The successful candidate will teach courses in our undergraduate Computer Science program, including core courses in the major, as well as courses to support the University's first year seminar and general education curriculum (as needed). There may be the opportunity to teach graduate courses (Master of Science) in the future pending new program development and approval. Experience with innovative teaching techniques and an interest in collaborating across disciplinary boundaries to address issues of broader scientific and social importance are highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated college/university teaching excellence in courses they have taught themselves and who show promise of versatility in teaching.

Computer Science faculty in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department are teacher scholars dedicated to mentoring undergraduate students and undergraduate research and have a wide range of research interests including cloud computing, network and cloud security, network storage, network secrecy, wireless networks, machine learning, parallel computing, computational social science; complex network analysis; computer modeling and simulation. Suffolk's placement in the core of Boston offers the Department's faculty a wealth of opportunities to collaborate with researchers at nearby institutions on exciting, innovative projects.

The successful candidate will contribute to Suffolk's rich tradition of community-engaged teaching and experiential education that prepares our diverse, substantially first-generation college students-40% of whom are Pell-eligible-for careers and civic engagement. The successful candidate will have a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and curricular diversity, mentoring and advising students-especially first-generation college students-as well as conducting impactful research with undergraduates.

This mission is lived through our decisions at every level. U.S. News ranked Suffolk University among the top 100 universities in the country for social mobility. Recently Suffolk was also listed 14th nationally in percentage of international students. Through student, faculty and staff recruitment and support, community engagement, curriculum development, and research, the University community works to advance equity for every student, every day. Finalists will be asked to provide educational transcripts and letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin immediately. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Initial interviews will be via Zoom followed by on-campus interviews. Candidates must hold a PhD by the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Inquiries about the position should be addressed to Dr. Dan Stefanescu, Chair of the Math & Computer Science Department, at [email protected].
