Assistant Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Reporting to the Director/Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), the Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs will assist with a full range of curatorial responsibilities for the school’s core exhibitions program in the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery as well as all spaces of the School – from the central floor of Avery Hall to various global sites. Thematic and timely exhibitions of student and faculty work and external materials inhabit all School spaces. The Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs will assist with and provide administrative support with temporary exhibitions, research, and scholarly publications and will work closely with the Dean, faculty, and students to foster significant and sustained curricular and scholarly engagement.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs will assist with and provide administrative support with temporary exhibitions, research, and scholarly publications and will work closely with the Dean, faculty, and students to foster significant and sustained curricular and scholarly engagement. (40%)

Assist the Director/Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs in researching, planning, publicizing, and managing the execution and follow-up for public exhibitions and events sponsored by the School and held on-site, off-site, or online, as well as School-wide events as assigned by the Dean such as Commencement, Open House, Year End Show, and Exhibition Openings. (30%)

Develops and oversees work plans, production schedules, and design/production team for each exhibition project. Monitors deadlines for staff, architects/designers/artists, external constituents, fabricators and production teams, printers, etc. Supervises installation and de-installation, maintaining superior quality of presentation and exhibition spaces. Opportunity for lead exhibition design dependent on qualifications and on a project-by-project basis. Contributes to curatorial research as needed and dependent on qualifications. (10%)

Works with lenders, architects/designers/artists on logistics, loan agreements, shipping, condition reports, and insurance fees. Supervises and mobilizes student employees in administrative, research, and production projects. (10%)

Manages departmental archives and databases. Coordinates documentation of exhibition projects. (5%)

Performs other duties as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent related experience required in Architecture, Design, Art, Arts Administration, or related fields preferred.

A minimum of 3-5 years of related experience is required; preferably in producing and installing exhibitions.

Proven record of project management. Must have a thorough understanding of exhibition standards and practices at cultural institutions; familiarity with standards and practices at universities is a plus. Combined experience in exhibition management, design, and research skills is a plus.

Ability to meet deadlines, set priorities, and work under pressure. Meticulous attention to detail. Superb organizational and communication (written, verbal, interpersonal) skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
