Supervises and participates in the work of a crew of laborers, tradesmen and equipment operators engaged in the construction, repair and maintenance of county highways, bridges, structures and adjacent areas; or supervises and participates in the work of a pavement preservation crew engaged in the resurfacing of streets and roads in the County of Maui; keeps work records and makes reports; and performs other duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Labor Supervisor in that the Highway Construction and Maintenance Supervisor I supervises and participates in the work of a crew of laborers, tradesmen and equipment operators engaged in a variety of highway construction, repair and maintenance projects; or supervises and participates in the work of a paving preservation crew; whereas the Labor Supervisor supervises a crew engaged in manual and semi-skilled work tasks in connection with the construction, repair and maintenance of highways, roads, grounds, drainage systems and adjacent areas.
This class differs from that of Highway Construction and Maintenance Supervisor II in that the Highway Construction and Maintenance Supervisor I supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of highway construction, repair and maintenance projects; or supervises and participates in the work of a paving preservation crew engaged in resurfacing of streets and roads in the County of Maui; whereas the Highway Construction and Maintenance Supervisor II supervises a variety of highway construction, repair, maintenance and alteration of County roads, highways, and adjacent areas through subordinate supervisors.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. Plans, lays out and assigns work to crew of equipment operators & laborers engaged in construction, surfacing and resurfacing streets and roads, maintaining, altering and repairing County roads, highways and adjacent areas.
Supervises and participates in paving, patching, surfacing, resurfacing, widening, and grading roads and highways.
Supervises and participates in grading and maintaining shoulders, cuts and fills.
Supervises and participates in removing dirt, rocks, rubbish and other debris and repairing storm damage.
Operates and adjusts a paving machine to spread and tamp asphalt and/or a VSS Macropaver truck for road resurfacing projects.
Rolls and compacts earth, sub-grades, maintains, lubricates and makes minor repairs to equipment.
May operate medium and heavy trucks and/or construction equipment representative of the next lower or higher class.
Assists in communicating with the public on paving/resurfacing work schedules.
Operate motorized equipment as required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of general construction and maintenance work experience of which two years shall have been in road construction and/or maintenance.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with applicable endorsements) and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Knowledge of: the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in road construction and maintenance; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: plan, lay out, assign and review the work of others; foresee hazards and take effective measures to eliminate them; make work reports; give and receive oral and written instructions.
