Underwrites credit exposure for less complex credit relationships and circumstances and actively manages a Middle Market and CML portfolio. Includes day-to-day client interaction, managing portfolio risk and adheres to all regulatory and compliance guidelines. A critical component of this role is early identification of emerging credit problems and industry trends.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

This specific role is part of the Specialty Municipal Portfolio Management team. Our focus is on fixed and variable-rate structure municipal loans for all types of municipalities and related airports, ports, and utilities. The Specialty Municipal Portfolio Management team manages a significant portfolio spread throughout all regions in the Truist footprint and comprises 11% of all commercial exposure. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of the entire underwriting process for new municipal credit transactions ranging in size from $5 million to $300 million. They must thrive in a fast-paced environment requiring them to manage internal and external deadlines on multiple significant, simultaneous transactions. They will be expected to lead the transaction deal team in a smooth execution and closing once mandated by the municipality. They also must be able to manage a $500 million to $1 billion or more municipal loan portfolio. In addition to regular client contact, the successful candidate will excel at formal communication and negotiation with various municipal financial advisors. They must act as an internal credit advisor for our Municipal and Government-focused specialty bankers.

Underwriting: leads the entire commercial underwriting process both internally and sometimes externally with prospects and clients. Underwrites, structures, and documents all prospect and client transactions. Possesses a mastery of client and industry expertise, analyzes individual company performance and the impact of industry and competitive dynamics and macroeconomic events on the creditworthiness of clients and prospects. Provides independent, in-depth analysis of financial statements, projections and business plans; identifies and mitigates key risks. Recommends and models appropriate loan structures and while maintaining expertise around the bank’s suite of ancillary products, including legal documentation impact and negotiation. Is accountable for the risk evaluation and associated regulatory compliance requirements. May require specialized underwriting skills for Commercial and Industrial, Commercial Real Estate, Corporate Banking, Working Capital and other Truist product offerings

Portfolio Management: Accountable for and manages assigned portfolio by monitoring performance and trends, proactively defining client credit solutions, identifying issues and following through for remediation. Responsible for risk rating integrity, annual reviews as well as financial statement spreading, compliance and regulatory review. Manages all amendment and waivers in the assigned portfolio. Is expected to be anticipatory, forward focused, independent, transparent and collaborative in identification, communication, and all aspects of management of risk.

Client Interaction: expands client relationships through occasional direct client calling efforts. In conjunction with other internal product partners, applies knowledge of credit policy, pricing and structure to develop solutions that meet the client's needs and the Bank's risk acceptance criteria.

Subject Matter Expertise: Partner closely with Investment Banking peers to ensure effective delivery of complex financing solutions to Commercial Clients through industry specific lens; responsible for maintaining extensive level of knowledge of corporate banking, investment banking and commercial banking solutions, in addition to market trends and business drivers. Understands and articulates industry trends, patterns in the economy, and the implications thereof, and proactively shares information across the PM organization.

Deal Team Management: Expected to manage these tasks by utilizing assigned Associates and Analysts. Mentors and coaches Associates and Analysts including annual performance review process for Analysts and Associates.

Span of Control (include # direct reports): no direct reports, but encompasses regular communication with Clients and Prospects, Portfolio Management teammates, Relationship Managers, Credit Risk Managers, Credit Review partners, Technology, and other internal and external audit and examiner functions.

Decision-Making and Autonomy: Teammates in this role are charged with providing independent current and forward looking risk view on clients within the assigned clients/prospects and portfolio. They author independent risk recommendations including, but not limited to; risk rating, compliance, underwriting. The recommendation is finally approved by ultimate risk approval officer.

Problem Complexity: Very Complex. Underwriters & Portfolio Manager 2s will be assigned to some of the more complex names and potentially larger portfolios.

Leadership / Influencing / Negotiating / Persuading: Yes, teammates in this position are required to develop an independent point of view and provide recommendations to appropriate decision makers. Expected to mentor all junior talent as well as LOB partners as appropriate.

Project or Program Management: Must be able to handle a large portfolio of Middle Market clients in addition to taking a leadership role in activities outside of day-to-day portfolio responsibilities that benefit the PM platform as a whole.

Nature and Area of Impact, including Risk: Must deliver solid credit and underwriting analyses and risk rating recommendations. Key risk drivers are credit and operational.

+ Ability to prioritize workflow and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
