About the Director of Athletics and Revolutionaries’ Athletics Reporting directly to the President, The Director of Athletics is responsible for the leadership, strategic planning, management and administration of the University’s athletic program. GW students and community don’t just cheer for their Revolutionaries but Raise High the Buff and Blue. Currently home to 20 varsity teams, the GW Revs have won team championships in 16 different sports – from basketball to cross country, gymnastics to golf, and are excellent in and on the water, with recent team championships in swimming & diving, rowing and water polo. Competing at the NCAA Division I level, the Revs have compiled 12 conference championships in the Atlantic 10 Conference over the past four years alone.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and units across campus to provide strategic leadership to elevate the GW Athletics Department in alignment with the University’s mission and vision to achieve goals for competitiveness, student academic achievement, and the student-athlete experience, in addition to generating overall enthusiasm and excitement for Athletics across campus (among students, faculty and staff) and in the community (including donors and alumni). • Commensurate with the University’s goals and standards as well as Title IX and Atlantic 10 Conference and NCAA rules and regulations, build and sustain an athletics program that strengthens all sports to be competitive at the championship level while ensuring an exceptional academic and overall experience for each student-athlete. • Promote the welfare of student-athletes with effective planning, policy creation, and programming that are in coordination with the University, Atlantic 10 Conference, and all NCAA rules and regulations. • Provide management, guidance, and leadership to coaches, staff members, administrators, and other members of the athletic department. • Ensure that the department operates in a manner that represents GW’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and shared values – integrity, collaboration, respect, excellence, openness, diversity, and courage – for student-athletes, coaches, and staff. • Work collaboratively and diligently to actively participate, engage in, and oversee fund-raising and revenue generating activities for the athletics program, including the identification and solicitation of individuals, corporations and sponsors for annual giving, endowment, scholarship and major gift support. • Possess high political acumen with the ability to navigate and manage the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics and the role it plays within higher education to include, but not limited to: new legislation, the monetization of sports, regulatory industries, state and federal mandates, media strategy, digital media streaming and T.V. revenue, and the GW Athletics fanbase – locally, nationally, and internationally. • Promote a community of compliance and high ethical standards. • Promote programs and generate fan support for student-athletes through developing and executing comprehensive marketing and communications strategies designed to enhance national awareness and generate revenues and resources for the university’s athletics department • Oversee fiscal operations, with the assistance of the Athletic Department staff. The Athletic Director will have overall responsibilities and be held accountable for finance and facilities of the University Athletic Department to ensure sound business practices. • Serve as the primary spokesperson of the Department promoting the philosophy and mission of the intercollegiate athletics program with faculty, staff, students, alumni, media and the general public. • Represent the Department at University, community, conference, NCAA and other appropriate meetings. • Provide oversight for compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA, federal, Title IX, conference and institutional policies by coaches, employees, friends, and supporters of the University. • Maintain open communication with the President, athletics department, administrators, coaches, and student-athletes of the well being on the athletics department. • Fulfill additional duties as directed by the President.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree is preferred.
Senior level athletic administrative experience, preferably at the Division I level, or related sports entities is required.
Project management, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
Proven ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
Demonstrated success in hiring, supervising, and mentoring senior-level staff.
Supervisory and budgetary experience.
History of remaining compliant along with a strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Inclusive leadership style with a proven history of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as working knowledge of Title IX.
Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
