Mental Health Aide

East Orange, NJ, United States

Job Summary

Performs selected patient care activities. The Mental Health Aide is a member of multidisciplinary treatment team and provides support for the patient's therapeutic treatment plan.

Essential Functions

Assists assigned patient with activities of daily living.

Provides and documents 15 minutes checks as assigned.

Provides 1:1 observation in a safe an effective manner.

Accurately takes and records vital signs as well as weight and height when needed.

Observes patient progress and reports status to staff nurse.

Ensures that all assigned patients are wearing an identification band.

Helps maintain unit cleanliness and neatness for patient comfort.

Ensures facility is safe and reports deficiencies to the nurse.

Checks for and reports malfunctioning or damaged equipment, destruction of property or signs of contraband.

Demonstrates the ability to follow the infection control policies of the hospital.

Demonstrates an awareness of the treatment goals and objectives of assigned patients.

Able to provide support for the patient's therapeutic treatment plan.

Seeks direction from the charge nurse as needed to provide optimum care for assigned patients.

Demonstrates therapeutic skills when communicating with patients and families.

Demonstrates ability to communicate with other team members in a way that promotes a positive and cooperative work environment.

Demonstrates knowledge of work practice and emergency procedures

Assumes responsibility for ongoing training and development by attending in-service programs, and staff meetings.

Demonstrates an ability to support patient education done by the professional staff

Demonstrates knowledge of the warning signs of aggressive behavior as outlined to secure training.

Demonstrates an ability to use skills taught in secure training.

Minimum Education/Certifications

High school diploma

Certifications required: BLS-CPR

Minimum Work Experience

1 year or more experience in Behavioral Health preferred.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed.
