TITLE: Supervisor of Special Education

RESPONSIBILITY: Teacher Training Facilitator

JOB GOAL: To provide sound educational programs for children who cannot sufficiently benefit from
regular classroom programs
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. LEADERSHIP
A. Contribute to the development of the total philosophy of education
B. Assist in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs
C. Recommend policies and programs essential to the needs of exceptional children
D. Provide leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs
E. Supervise and coordinate all special education programs and related services
F. Evaluate existing programs as an ongoing responsibility, and recommend changes and additions
G. Supervise and coordinate home instruction for homebound or hospitalized students
H. Evaluate, on an ongoing basis, the total special education program, curriculum procedures, and individual student needs and achievements
I. Make recommendations on design, furnishings, equipment, and location of new special education facilities
J. Provide programs of a remedial nature to supplement regular classroom instruction for students with learning or visual disabilities
II. ADMINISTRATION, ORGANIZATION, AND SUPERVISION
A. Develop and initiate survey programs for continuous identification of exceptional children
B. Establish procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment, and reappraisal of students relative to the special education services program
C. Develop procedures for referral, securing medial reports, psychological examination, and placement
D. Assist in selection and recommendation for hiring of all special education personnel
E. Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required or administratively useful
F. Assist with and maintain complete and cumulative individual records of all children receiving special services enrolled in special classes
G. Supervise preparation of attendance reports and similar data necessary for reimbursement of funds, collecting of tuition for out-of-parish students, and similar fiscal matters
H. Keep abreast of financial aid for special education
I. Develop budget recommendations and provide expenditure control on established budget for special education and maintain a current inventory of equipment purchased for special education.
J. Establish procedures for requisitioning, ordering, and paying for special education equipment and supplies
K. Approve all supplies, materials, and texts used by special education personnel
L. With approval from the Superintendent, serve as the official representative of the school system at all IEP/Placement
meetings or appoint an appropriate designee to assume the duty. Commitment of the school system’s resources to
implement the IEP must be approved by the supervisor in consultation with the Superintendent.
III. SCHOOL, COMMUNITY, AND STAFF RELATIONS
A. Work in cooperation with the transportation department with regard to exceptional children
B. Evaluate personnel serving in the special education area who are not specifically assigned to a school
C. Interpret the objectives and programs of the special education services to the board, the administration, the staff, and the public at large
D. Consult with parents of students enrolled in the special education program
IV. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND ETHICS
A. Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meetings
B. Maintain a positive attitude toward constructive criticism from supervisory personnel
C. Exhibit a positive attitude by being supportive of and concerned with the total child and by interacting in a reasonable, fair, and impartial manner in dealing with students, faculty, principals, and staff
D. Exhibit the physical, emotional, and mental attributes necessary to provide an environment in which administrative responsibilities can be met
E. Maintain a positive, professional appearance which adheres to the dress code stated in the Acadia Parish School Board Policies and Procedures Manual
F. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned
II. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH PLAN
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month year
