Structural Engineer_

**Description**

About the Role

Join one of the most diverse and innovative engineering design teams with multiple specialties within the transportation sector. The Port Authority’s airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals and rail transportation systems include many of the busiest and most important transportation assets in the country. Reporting to a Senior Structural Engineer, and working closely with a Principal Engineer the successful candidate will provide structural engineering design services including the design of new, and rehabilitation or expansion of existing structures for all phases of a project, from conceptual design, through construction. The Port Authority is in the early phase of several multi-billion dollar major rehabilitation projects, at Airport, Bridges, Rail and Port facilities. This position plays critical roles in in-house design as well as in review of consultant prepared work.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Structural Engineering Design Division, the Structural Engineer will be responsible for professional design services including:

+ Developing creative design solutions.

+ Preparing contract drawings, design computations, writing specifications and cost estimates for new facility structures, and for the repair or expansion of existing structures.

+ Ensuring technical integrity, safety, efficiency maintainability with sound design details and concepts.

+ Reviewing contractor construction submittals and consultant design submittals.

+ Preparing engineering reports.

+ Evaluating field conditions and structural deficiencies.

+ Coordinating and conducting field inspections related to design projects and ensuring projects are coordinated with other disciplines, Line Department facilities, and outside stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (with concentration in Structural Engineering) from an ABET four-year accredited engineering college or university.

+ Minimum of four years of experience primarily in design and contract document preparation.

+ Experience in the use of software including but not limited to, structural design (SAP, ETABS, STAAD, RISA, or similar), modeling (AutoCAD, REVIT, or similar), and Microsoft Office suite.

+ Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain a driver’s license within the first 6-months of employment.

Desired Qualifications

+ Proficiency in preparing contract drawings and structural inspection experience.

+ Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline design team.

+ Sound understanding of construction engineering.

+ Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize as required.

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.

+ General knowledge of building codes and their reference standards, such as NYC Building Code, IBC code (NJ), AASHTO Specifications for Highway Bridges

+ Ability and credentials required to obtain a Professional Engineer license in the State of NY or NJ within two years of employment.

Selection Process

The application process varies by position, but typically includes an initial phone interview for qualified candidates, followed by a more in-depth interview(s) and/or assessment(s). Selected candidates who are made a conditional job offer will be asked to undergo a background check.
