Environmental Engineering
Philadelphia, PA, United States
A funded graduate student position for Fall 2024 is available in the Li Research Group (https://yalinli.group ) led by Dr. Yalin Li in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. The student will conduct research to support the design, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and life cycle assessment (LCA) of water, energy, and civil infrastructure, including but not limited to centralized wastewater treatment facilities, non-sewered sanitation systems, low-/zero-carbon materials, bioenergy and bioproducts, and emerging technologies for waste valorization. The student will also support the development of open-source platforms including QSDsan (https://qsdsan.com ) and BioSTEAM (https://biosteam.readthedocs.io ).
The position will cover tuition with a competitive stipend and benefits including health insurance. The students will work in a supportive research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and will be engaged in multidisciplinary collaboration for convergence research. Dr. Li will work closely with the students to provide tailored mentoring plans based on their career goals, and will fund activities for professional development (e.g., conferences and workshops for research and leadership development).
We welcome applications from candidates with an undergraduate or MS degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or other related fields. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, able to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team, and have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Candidates with experience in process modeling (GPS-X, BioWin, Aspen Plus, SuperPro Designer), TEA, LCA (openLCA, SimaPro, GREET), programming (Python in particular), or geographic modeling (ArcGIS) are preferred. However, exceptional candidates with wet lab experience but no/limited modeling background are also welcome.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the candidate is identified. However, the decision will not be made until March 1st, 2024.
Dr. Yalin Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University. The Li Group focuses on advancing the sustainability of water and energy infrastructure through integrated experimentation and modeling. Specifically, the group is interested in (i) experimental development of thermochemical and catalytic technologies for bioprocess engineering and resource recovery; and (ii) sustainable design and decision-making to prioritize the research, development, and deployment (RD&D) of technologies.
