Ultrasound Engineer

to join the Cardiac Therapeutic Ultrasound Laboratory team.

This position will be independently responsible for the design, fabrication, research, and development of novel ultrasound-based ablation medical devices for pre-clinical research and eventual clinical translation for the treatment of cardiovascular applications (ventricular tachycardia, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). The research explores therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound transducers and prototype devices, characterization (both electrical and acoustic), and pre-clinical implementation (as part of a team performing both ex-vivo and large animal in-vivo studies) of catheter-based cardiac/myocardial ablation. Opportunities will be available to interface with and participate in other research projects in the Cardiac Therapeutic Ultrasound Lab and partner laboratories within the Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound.

Typical duties and responsibilities will include:

Developing new manufacturing techniques to fabricate devices using tools to machine and process raw materials to achieve ultrasound transducer design specifications.

Applying engineering techniques to rapidly fabricate intracardiac ultrasound ablation catheters, ensuring consistency to allow comparisons of use in large-animal scientific studies.

Developing methods for image-guided ultrasound therapy by integrating systems such as diagnostic ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and electro-anatomical mapping.

Performing scientific experiments and device characterization testing.

Contributing to publications and grant applications by designing protocols, describing methods applied, and explaining experimental findings in technical detail.

Participating in animal research by operating experimental ultrasound devices (no direct animal contact required).

Developing and maintaining knowledge of regulatory standards and manufacturing practices applicable to therapeutic ultrasound devices and intra-cardiac catheters.

Overseeing laboratory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in engineering or scientific discipline and two years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Ultrasound transducer and catheter fabrication from raw materials including soldering, irrigation, air-backing, sealing, and epoxy. Electronic (comfort with network analyzer) and acoustic (comfort with hydrophones and radiation force balances) characterization of ultrasound transducers and piezo materials. Manuscript preparation. MATLAB programming. CAD software skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

Grant submission preparation. Regulatory background including FDA-level quality systems documentation processes and good labor & practices with pre-clinical workflow. Large animal research methods. Develop related intellectual property.

Application Process:
