Senior Design Engineer
Houston, TX, United States
SUMMARY
Lead engineering design projects to provide innovative and efficient tools and systems for downhole applications in the oil and gas industry.Typical product lines include Wellbore Departure, Well Abandonment, Thru Tubing, Fishing and Drilling services.Responsible for executing the entire product life cycle from concept to commercialization.
The Engineer will be responsible for the development of equipment associated with down-hole applications. The Engineer's responsibility will be conceptualizing ideas, technically evaluating feasible concepts (component/feature stress analysis and operating limitations) to meet operational requirements, producing engineering CAD models and drawings, testing prototypes, supporting field/operations, troubleshooting and iterating based on field trial feedback - leading up to commercialization of the product and service. The engineer will be expected to lead their project(s) during the entire lifecycle which could last from a few months to several years.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the development of designing mechanical downhole tools from concept to product launch to devise practical and reliable engineering solutions to meet client and field requirements.
Perform standard engineering calculations and apply established design standards to complete design activities.
Produce advanced analyses and mathematical models, as required, and draw design conclusions.
Use creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in developing new products.
Assist in identifying and organizing requirements with the stakeholders.
Generate engineering product files including CAD models, assembly layouts, and component drawings.
Coordinate with Manufacturing and outside suppliers to build prototypes suitable for testing.
Design testing procedures and coordinate with others to conduct the lab tests. Document test results, analyze test data, write test reports, and develop internal client presentations.
Use project management skills and established product development process to execute the projects to completion.
Provide timely, corrective actions on all assigned manufacturing defects and field issues.
Conduct and/or participate in technical reviews of requirements, specifications, and designs.
Create and maintain product maintenance and operating documentation.
Provide training and support to clients and field representatives.
May assign, direct and review work of technicians and provide guidance to designers or other engineers. May mentor junior engineers regarding technical matters.
May author/co-author technical reports, papers, articles, patents, and presentations.
May contribute to design standards and support design re-use (best practices, etc.)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
Oil & Gas experience is essential.
Minimum of 10 years related design and product development experience in downhole tools.
Must be willing to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
Must have superior project management and project execution skill set.
Experience in remedial, milling and fishing tools is strongly desirable. Alternatively, experience in drilling and/or completions tools is acceptable.
Creativity, curiosity, product vision, growth mindset, and problem-solving skills are critical.
Experience with 3D CAD required, preferably in Pro/ENGINEER Creo or equivalent.
Ability to conduct analyses using FEA (Abaqus or equivalent is a plus)
Strong communication skills within all levels of the organization, which include verbal and written.
