POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a results-oriented Research Senior Legal Counsel to lead legal services for the Sinai Health research community. Reporting directly to the General Counsel and the Director of the Office of Technology Transfer & Industry Liaison, this pivotal role will provide critical legal support, oversee compliance, and contribute to policy development. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing corporate goals while safeguarding our Institution's discovery and clinical research endeavours. The Research Senior Legal Counsel will lead the review, drafting and negotiation of complex agreements with peer hospitals, third-party vendors and other healthcare organizations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work under the supervision and reporting to the Sinai Health General Counsel and the Director of the Office of Technology Transfer & Industry Liaison, to:

Provide on-site oversight and direction to the staff in the research contracts group in accordance with Sinai Health policies and procedures.

Work in collaboration with Sinai Health Privacy and Risk, Grants Administration, Procurement, Research Ethics Board, researchers, clinicians, research coordinators, and other stakeholders to support the organization’s research legal activities.

Assist with institutional compliance initiatives and internal risk assessment of research activities.

Engage and manage external legal counsel as authorized by the General Counsel and Director of the OTTIL.

Mentor and train Sinai Health research legal staff, providing for career development planning and opportunities in consultation with the General Counsel and Director of the OTTIL, in accordance with the approved annual budget.

Lead staff to meet Sinai Health expectations for productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment and provide effective performance feedback.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB), called to the Ontario Bar and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.

Minimum 5 to 8 years of legal experience in health law or privacy law or experience gained at a law firm or in-house legal department in the health/pharma/medical sciences.

Experience drafting and negotiating data transfer agreements, material transfer agreements, collaboration agreements, clinical trial agreements, funding agreements and research services agreements.

Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience managing individuals with a legal background.

A well-organized self-starter with strategic thinking and practical problem-solving skills who can independently identify underlying issues and implement solutions.

A proven team player who can establish effective working relationships at all levels of the organization.

Strong communication, negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills

Knowledge of intellectual property, risk management, procurement, health administration and policy, data protection and privacy law, particularly in the context of an academic clinical and biomedical research environment in Canada

There are very limited circumstances in which approval will be given for a medical exemption from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
