Optical Engineer

The Optical Technologies Group enables optical communication hardware for Meta data center networking and AI/ML systems to support Meta's mission of bringing the world together. We are looking for an Optical Engineer to qualify optical communications modules for Meta's cutting-edge, global, data center network. As an Optical Engineer, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to Meta's data center network and influence the optical networking industry and ecosystem.
Optical Engineer Responsibilities
Collaborate with Meta engineers on the next generation optical communication technology with a particular focus on the testing of optical modules and subsystems for Data Center applications.
Work in a collaborative environment across Meta teams including SW, Thermal, Mechanical, and EE.
Develop test and simulation methodologies relevant for next-generation, high-speed optical technologies.
Develop automation practices and solutions for lab testing.
Lead new optical communication NPI programs, working closely with optics vendors and ODMs.
Interface with the industry and contribute to the RFI/RFP process for optical solutions.
Communicate complex optical hardware requirements to non-experts both internally and to industry-facing stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Sciences and Engineering, and/or related field.
10+ years of experience in the development and validation of optical communication components such as lasers, transmitters, receivers, and transceivers.
10+ years of experience in high-speed optical and electrical test and measurement equipment, control, data acquisition and test automation.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters or PhD in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Sciences and Engineering, and/or related field.
Experience in high-speed optical and electrical test and test automation.
Programming skills in one or more of the following: Python, C/C++, or MATLAB.
Experience working in distributed software development environments.
Experience with system-level optical communication hardware and components.
Experience in creating or influencing product requirements documents (PRDs) and data sheets.
Experience with advanced modulation formats, direct detect and coherent systems (e.g., OOK, PAM-4, QPSK, 8-QAM, 16QAM) and concepts.
Experience with optical integration including InP PICs, Silicon-photonic PICs, PIC-IC integration, and 3D optical packaging technologies.
