Position Summary

The Socio-legal Studies Program at the University of Denver seeks to hire an adjunct instructor for the Spring 2024 term, March 1-June 30th to teach an upper division undergraduate course on a law and society topic. DU's academic terms consist of ten weeks of instruction and one week of final exam period. The course will be listed in the Political Science Department.

Essential Duties

Teach a 10-week in person course on campus in two sessions of 110 minutes each per week

Hold weekly office hours (either on campus or virtually, via Zoom video-conferencing)

Assign and evaluate papers and exams as appropriate, and be available to assist students with course requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Subject matter expertise in a relevant field

Experience with course management software (blackboard, canvas, or similar) or ability to complete trainings on Canvas (DU's current system)

Ability to provide feedback to students in a timely manner

Ability to meet deliverable deadlines

Required Qualifications

Master's degree or ABD in political science or closely related social science field (e.g. international relations or political sociology) or JD.

Evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods to engage diverse student populations effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Political Science or closely related social science field (e.g. international studies, socio-legal studies, or political sociology).

Previous experience teaching a college-level course in political science as the primary instructor.

Experience interacting with and effectively teaching diverse communities of students.

Experience using the following features of the Canvas course management system: Assignment submission, discussion boards, quizzes, announcements, files, and the gradebook.

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar ).

Course Rate

The 2024 adjunct rate is $4772 per four credit course.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, available market information, and course enrollment, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
