Job Summary The African American Studies (AAS) program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the examination of Black politics and life in the United States. This program is designed to be of interest to students who want to explore the many contributions African Americans have made to the political, historical, social, and artistic fabric of the United States. The AAS program services students enrolled in the program, faculty affiliated with the program, and offers year-round activities and events to educate the campus and local communities and promote interdisciplinary studies. We align with the mission and vision of the College of Arts and Sciences to prepare students to be global citizens who value diversity.

This position provides leadership, planning, and coordination of activities and events for the AAS program. AAS graduate assistants will learn the work involved in sustaining a successful interdisciplinary studies program and will deepen their understanding of African American communities in ways that support graduate studies in any of our affiliated fields of inquiry. This position is ideal for graduate students whose future includes interest and collaboration with African American communities.

Additional Information 30% Oversee operation of the AAS office. In collaboration with another graduate assistant,

this will include managing and creating programming for events, coordinating with

affiliate departments and faculty across campus, assisting with fundraising and grant

applications, meeting with community leaders, and speaking publicly at meetings to

represent the program. Ideal candidates should be familiar with Microsoft Office 365.

30% Mentor undergraduate minors. Hold regular meetings with assigned mentees to

discuss questions related to the minor and overall academic functioning and

adjustment. Plan and coordinate at least two events per semester to connect

undergraduate students. Prepare at least one professional development event per

semester for undergraduate students.

20% Collaborate with campus groups. Serve as the Program’s liaison to the Multicultural

Center and other Interdisciplinary Studies programs, such as Women, Gender, and

Sexuality Studies (WGSS) and Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS); consult

and develop programs in consultation with the Black Student Union (BSU) and the

Black Graduate Association (BGA). This requires leadership to coordinate student

interests with academic programming.

20% Manage promotional activities. Update social media accounts, create promotional

materials, and update website to increase the program’s visibility across campus and

the community. Compose emails and organize meetings among faculty and other

interested parties to keep the interdisciplinary community informed and in contact.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate 1473.00

Required Qualifications 1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at http://hr.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/GA_Handbook.pdf

2. Must be a degree seeking graduate student at Illinois State University in one of the following areas:

- Anthropology

- Communication

- History

- English

- Languages

- Literatures and Cultures

- Psychology

- CSPA

3. Applicants must have specific interest in interdisciplinary studies in African American communities.

Work Hours To be determined. Hiree will work with director to set up hours.
