Gain practical skills and experience working with youth under the guidance of the Salvation Army Kroc Center's youth development leaders. Their accredited day camp serves thousands of families throughout San Diego, where the biggest goals are to stay safe and have fun!
Explore what it takes to be a team player and a leader in the community and among peers. Located at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, Junior Leader volunteers are given the weekly opportunity to swim in their numerous pools and ice skate with the campers, on-site.
During a one-week training session, teens (15-17) focus on leadership skills relevant to supervising children in a camp setting. After completing a training session, teens will have the opportunity to enroll in up to eight additional weeks of day camp. Junior Leaders will additionally work on projects such as planning and organizing camper activities while experiencing behind-the-scenes aspects of camp. Junior Leaders receive abuse prevention training and receive First Aid/AED/CPR training during their training session. All interested volunteers are required to apply and interview for the position.
Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes Time Commitment: During the training week, the time commitment is 9am-4pm from June 10-14 or June 24-28. For any of the other summer camp dates, it's also 9am-4pm but you will not be required to attend the entirety of the shift. The summer camps runs Monday- Friday from June 10-August 13.
Onboarding Process: During the onboarding process, volunteers are required to fill out an application and send it to Cher Stoup at [email protected] (or drop it off at the Kroc Center) with a letter of interest and a letter of recommendation attached. Within the week, Cher will reach out with interviewing availability. The application and acceptance process takes around two weeks.
Required Skills/Experience: There are no skills or experiences required for this opportunity, but everyone must be between 15-17 years old.
Desired Skills/Experience : Volunteers may be interested in childcare/development or CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
Attire: Closed-toe shoes, appropriate bottoms to be worn around children. Camp shirts will be provided.
Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be active enough to stand and walk around the facility with their high energy campers. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations. The space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible.
Note: Although the Kroc Center operates under the Salvation Army, you are not required to be religious to participate in our camp. Everyone is welcome!
