Summary of the Job Description:
The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is looking for a full-time Accountant to join the Finance/Accounting team. Under the general direction of the Vice President of Finance and direct supervision of the Senior Accountant, the Accountant is responsible for cash receipts, grant and contract billings, reporting, managing, and monitoring of receivables and record keeping. The individual is also responsible for preparing journal entries, monthly financial statements, and maintaining grant compliance schedules. The Accountant must be cross trained to handle the accounting for all various programs and accounts payable duties. The YMCA's recruitment process includes comprehensive background check such as drug test and criminal background check.
Summary of Essential Functions:
Prepare and process monthly invoices and reports for grants and contracts for all operations in the organization.
Oversee and assist in the collections of all outstanding Accounts Receivables for the Association.
Assist with monthly reconciliation of bank statements to the general ledger accounts.
Process checks, credit cards and other payments into the accounting system.
Update and maintain Grants and Contract Expenditure reports on a monthly basis.
Maintain Grants and Contract database and electronic files.
Update and maintain grant tracking schedule as part of the monthly financial report package.
Prepare journal entries and assist with the preparation of monthly financial packages.
Prepare reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and grant income accounts to General Ledger.
Assist with monitoring and assessing Association software programs database usage.
Ensure all platform modules are functioning properly and perform all trouble shooting communications with Association software program services.
Ensure systems are in place to guarantee proper maintenance of all various programs and financial development accounting files.
Assist in the budget process.
Assist the VP of Finance and Accounting Department staff as needed.
Prepare schedules for audit and actively participate in the audit process.
Ensure reports, records and transactions are maintained and performed accurately and promptly in accordance with Federal and State law where applicable.
Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, donors' standards and YMCA policies in all financial transactions.
Travel and drive for the YMCA business as required in accordance with Newark YMCA Policy.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance.
Minimum of five years accounting experience.
Experience managing federal, state and city grants preferred.
Proficient in Excel, Word, General Ledger and Accounts Payable, knowledge and experience in Accounting software packages.
Must be detailed oriented and possess precise/thorough work habits.
Not-for-profit experience is desired.
Strong office management skills.
Strong time management and organizational skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a professional manner, displaying tact and diplomacy when needed.
Strong verbal and written skills.
Ability to work under minimal supervision.
Must be flexible to work and adjust schedule for varying accounting deadlines.
Valid driver's license.
