Responsibilities

The Sustainability and Energy Engineer reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager, within the Division of Facilities Management and Real Estate (FMRE). The position has overall responsibility for the implementation and engineering of the DFCI energy and sustainability programs in support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Mission, core values, and strategic plan. The position is focused on ensuring reliable delivery of mission critical utilities to DFCI facilities, monitoring and analyzing energy usage, and ensuring DFCI is complying with current energy codes and best practices. As The Institute's footprint expands, this position has the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on Dana-Farber's unprecedented sustainability and energy future.

Prepare and manage the DFCI Utility budget and cost projections. Pay all DFCI utility bills and maintain accurate database spreadsheets. Provide graphic representations and reports of required metrics for presentation to leadership.

Perform utility meter readings for bill processing requirements, system performance analysis, and to identify billing discrepancies.

Serve on the Energy Steering Committee of the Longwood Medical Energy Collaborative (LMEC). Act as a technical and operation liaison for LMEC. Represent DFCI interests in dealing with the MATEP Plant and other LMA institutions.

Participate in LMEC detailed technical audits and review plans on behalf of both the ESC and DFCI. Via the ESC, ensure MATEP compliance with operating standards as outlined by LMEC technical audits.

Maintain DFCI energy standards for implementation in all DFCI construction projects in conjunction with DFCI Engineering staff. Provide Energy Engineering expertise for DFCI by keeping informed of city, state, and federal new and changing codes and policies.

Oversee DFCI's BERDO compliance including applying for flexibility measures, yearly data reporting, 3rd party verification, and track/forecast DFCI's on-going cost for compliance. Provide reports and/or presentations as needed for leadership knowledge.

Act as the point of contact for DFCI's on-going VPPA. Track project status and performance, financial transactions, and management of RECs in relation to BERDO. Provide reports and/or updates as needed for leadership knowledge.

Navigate access to available grants and rebates, such as Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), for new construction and retrofit projects. Propose new projects that utilize attainable funding to improve building efficiency.

Lead and promote all aspects of the Institute's Energy Management Program across different parts of the organization and ensure integration of best practices. Update and maintain existing DFCI Strategic Energy Masterplan.

Participate in city and regional organizations, such as the Green Ribbon Commission, Power Options, and A Better City. Represent DFCI and participate in efforts to promote energy efficiency among fellow Boston institutions and private organizations. Establish DFCI as a leader in energy efficiency and climate change mitigation.

Participate as a leader on the DFCI Sustainability Committee and provide support and resources for the committee's activities. Develop annual and multi-year plans, and progress reports for the committee in conjunction with Environmental Health & Safety Department. Act as a technical resource for future required reporting metrics, such as scope 3 and embodied emissions.

Evaluate sustainable initiatives for technical feasibility, cost effectiveness/ROI, and acceptability by the Dana-Farber community. Utilize HDD/CDD, weather normalization, and other standards to evaluate system performance. Assist Project Teams with calculations for ROI on energy-focused infrastructure projects.

The Engineer will perform assistance of assessment, evaluation, and documentation of medical, research and office building retro-commissioning, continuous commissioning, and energy efficiency projects. Primary focus will be on HVAC systems & controls, Lab Systems and fume hoods, energy recovery systems, lighting controls, and related energy consuming systems.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Management required.

LEED Certification; Certified Energy Manager (CEM); and Certification as a Sustainable Facilities Professional (SFP) credentials are highly desirable.

Minimum of 5 years working in facilities management and/or energy management role, both in a healthcare environment preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must possess an understanding of environmental best practices.

Knowledge of applicable building codes and ASHRAE standards.

Must have strong communication skills; be able to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, both orally and by written reports.

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Especially critical are skills and experience in leading and collaborating with colleagues that are not direct reports.

Proven ability to evaluate drawings, equipment specifications, and determine if actual field installation conforms to documents or can be improved for maximum energy efficiency. Experience in overall integration of design engineering, construction, start-up/turnover and subsequent projects.

Demonstrated computer literacy skills especially with spreadsheet, word processing and project management software, familiarity or interest in various software programs, spreadsheets, databases and graphics.
