NJ State Requirents

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administer Anesthesia Care in a University Hospital or ASC setting.

Required Experience:

Previous experience as a licensed provider

Required Certifications :

CRNA: Board certification, License, ACLS/BLS +/- PALS.

EDUCATION STANDARD

A. Valid State of New Jersey license as a Registered Nurse.

B. *Board eligible or Board certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

C. Valid re-certification from Council of Recertification of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

D. Current BLS, ACLS, and or PALS certifications.

(*If Board-eligible anesthetist does not pass the written Board on the initial attempt, he/she will not be allowed to practice as an anesthetist until passage of the certification exam.)

Unit Description: University Hospital Setting

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Administers anesthesia under clinical supervision of staff anesthesiologists. Selects, obtains and/or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis, and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery. Requests appropriate consultation for abnormal patients' responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or other form of therapy.

B. Demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to provide care appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric population. This requires the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify age-specific patient needs, and to provide the care needed.

C. Performs clinical teaching to nurse anesthesia students, medical students, and residents.

D. Demonstrates the knowledge to monitor and manage patients under regional, general or MAC anesthesia. May administer epidural, spinal, and Bier block anesthesia under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist.

E. Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques, as requested by the physician.

F. Accurately assesses airway and plans for anticipated difficulties. Establishes airway utilizing methods which avoids emergent untoward events.

G. Conducts a thorough review of patient's charts to include history and physical, diagnostic testing, and a current physical assessment. Implements, with the Anesthesiologist, the anesthesia plan that has been discussed with the Anesthesiologist.

H. Selects, applies, and or inserts appropriate noninvasive and invasive modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient's physical status.

I. Demonstrates compliance with departmental policies and procedures and mandatory education requirements including but not limited to safety, infection control, attendance and dress code.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL DEMANDS

A. The work associated with this position requires standing and walking throughout the work day with opportunity to sit for prolonged periods of time. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending and kneeling are also required.

B. Light-to-moderate lifting to position patients for procedures or transport. Pushes and pulls on patients' stretchers during transport. Occasionally lifts medical equipment, exerting light-to-moderate physical effort (e.g. move items weighing up to 25 pounds).
