The position will be a part of the Education and Integrative Initiatives team and will work seamlessly with the faculty and teaching teams in the degree-granting units including Earth Systems, Sustainability Science and Practice, and the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. The role will involve collaborating across units for curriculum development, course evaluation, and will involve co-teaching with faculty across the School.

If you are passionate about teaching and working with students; if you thrive in a collaborative environment; if you are excited to create and scale innovative sustainability courses - this role may be for you!

The primary duties of this position include:

Partner with faculty, co-instructors, and academic staff to develop and enhance curricular materials and structure for existing courses; help ensure the courses meet their teaching and learning objectives

Develop a new undergraduate course in complex social-environmental systems and contribute new curricula to existing courses

Develop new case studies to illustrate interdisciplinary and systems-thinking approaches

Supervise course teaching assistants and develop lesson plans and pedagogical approaches for course sections

Advise students enrolled in courses

Create personalized course evaluations and share relevant feedback with teaching teams to foster adaptive management and high quality of the courses.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a terminal degree (Ph.D. preferred) in environmental and/or social science fields and one to three years of teaching social-environmental systems in higher education. Ideal candidates will have an interdisciplinary lens, strong knowledge of SES frameworks, and experience applying SES frameworks to sustainability challenges either in the classroom or in practice.

Successful candidates will have exceptional verbal and written communication skills; engaging presentation and teaching skills; exceptional organizational skills; and a positive track record of team teaching and collaboration. We seek candidates with a flexible, open-minded, and collaborative mindset and an ability to navigate and innovate in a dynamic environment. Successful candidates will have a track record inspiring and supporting students; developing and implementing new programs or curriculum; and taking initiative to achieve agreed-upon goals.

We seek candidates from a range of social-environmental systems fields and topics with expertise in characterizing, understanding, and intervening effectively in complex SES. Specific areas may include knowledge of frameworks, models, and tools for working within SES; sustainable development; decision-making under uncertainty; multi-actor collaboration including working with Native communities and underserved populations; and transformative systems change and leadership concepts. Of particular interest are candidates with both theoretical and practical background working in SES to achieve sustainability objectives, as well as candidates with understanding across a variety of thematic areas, including water, energy, food, urban planning, or health.
