Behavioral Health Clinician I/II

The City of Berkeley is accepting applications for Behavioral Health Clinician I and Behavioral Health Clinician II in the  Health, Housing & Community Services (HHCS) Department . These roles work in the  Mental Health and Aging Services Divisions and demonstrate a commitment to cultural competence and a wellness/recovery orientation. The Behavioral Health Clinician I provides a variety of community behavioral health services to clients and to the community in an outpatient setting. Responsibilities include performing assessments, case coordination, care management, rehabilitative services, and psychotherapy, providing diagnosis and treatment plans and linkage to resources, and preparing reports, case summaries, and other required forms.

The Behavioral Health Clinician II handles  more complex or difficult client cases. In addition to the responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Clinician I, this level may lead teams conducting intake assessments and crisis intervention.

Case management teams include:

Social Services Unit (SSU) :  Time-limited case management for residents age 55 and over. SSU also provides housing resources and support to homeless and formerly homeless adults.

Adult and Homeless Full Service Partnership Teams (AFSP or HFSP) : Services for clients who are considered the highest need. Assertive Community Treatment Model with low staff-to-client ratios and a focus on providing care as a team.

Comprehensive Community Treatment (CCT) and Focus on Independence Teams (FIT) : Specialty mental health services. CCT serves approximately 170 adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Staff offer support with symptom management, housing stability, and recovery goals.  FIT offers ongoing support to approximately 100 individuals who have graduated from higher levels of care.

Mobile Crisis Team (MCT) and Crisis Assessment and Triage/Transitional Outreach Team (CAT/TOT) : Crisis intervention services and consultation regarding mental health issues. MCT is on duty 365 days per year and provides 5150 evaluations, de-escalation, assessment, and support. CAT/TOT provides screening for ongoing mental health services, follow-up to connect individuals to Berkeley Mental Health, linkage to social services, and coordination with other agencies.

Family, Youth and Children Team (FYC) : Culturally responsive mental health services including individual/family therapy, wraparound services, and care coordination for children, adolescents, and families who live in or attend school in Berkeley.

High School Mental Health (HSMH) : Berkeley High School Health Center and Berkeley Technology Academy Health Center are integrated, multidisciplinary co-locations of our Mental Health and Public Health Divisions. Services include individual therapy, group facilitation, crisis assessment/intervention, case management, educational advocacy, community outreach, and collaboration with parents, caregivers, and families.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: A  master's degree from a recognized school of Social Work, Counseling, Psychiatric Nursing, or other Marriage and Family Therapy eligible discipline, or a doctorate degree in Psychology, AND experience as specified below: Behavioral Health Clinician I: Field placement of at least one (1) year in a medical, psychiatric, or community mental health setting.

Behavioral Health Clinician II: Two (2) years experience in an out-patient clinic, hospital, child guidance clinic, mental health program, or family agency which included regular psychiatric consultation.

Other requirements for Behavioral Health Clinician I include registration as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW), and/or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) with the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) OR a Registered Psychologist with the Board of Psychology.

Other requirements for Behavioral Health Clinician II include possession of a License as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, or Psychologist, as provided for by California state law.

Incumbents in both positions must be able to travel to various locations within and outside of Berkeley to meet program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, incumbents must have a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.   NOTE: Incumbents in the Behavioral Health Clinician I position are automatically promoted to Behavioral Health Clinician II upon attainment of licensure.
