Position Summary

As Chief Financial Officer, provide executive-level leadership and management of accounting and financial functions, including setting the policies, procedures, strategies, and practices for a $50M+ Association. A key member of MBA’s senior leadership team advising the CEO and Board of Directors with respect to financial reporting, financial stability, liquidity, and financial growth. In addition to strong financial expertise, this position requires exceptional communication and collaboration skills and a proven ability to engage effectively with senior executives, such as our Board of Directors and Committees.

Financial Leadership

Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management.

Develop and implement long-term financial strategies aligned with the Association's overall business objectives.

Determines, manages, and directs the financial planning and development of the financial policies, strategies, and practices of MBA and its related organizations. Advises the CEO and Senior Management Team (SMT) with respect to financial reporting, financial stability and liquidity, and financial growth.

Develops, directs, and maintains sound accounting principles, practices, and systems of internal controls and procedures. Leads the development and maintenance of sound accounting and financial processes and establishes the requirements for accurate and timely recording and processing by the MBA subsidiaries, who are responsible for the decentralized capture of revenue and expense transactions.

Oversees the operations and staff of the Finance Department, which includes general ledger accounting, receivables, payables, financial reporting, and budgeting. Establishes the appropriate structure and staffing to provide accurate, meaningful, and timely financial information to the Board, Officers, CEO, and SMT. Establishes and maintains up-to-date policies and practices that provide for an efficient and effective internal control environment and comply with all external reporting requirements. Ensures that such practices and procedures are maintained through consistent monitoring and oversight.

Analyzes and interprets monthly/quarterly/annual financial results/trends; directs the development of financial management reports/procedures and presents findings and recommendations to MBA’s Board, Officers, CEO, and SMT. Leads the delivery of monthly financial results to the Board, Officers, and the CEO and monthly financial forecasts to assist in the Association's short- and long-term financial planning.

Manages the relationships with outside financial institutions and investment advisors. Coordinate with outside investment advisors, the MBA Investment Committee, and the Board to develop appropriate Investment Guidelines for MBA’s Operating Reserve Fund and RIHA Trust investment funds. This includes ensuring that the service providers provide appropriate custodial, reporting, pricing, and performance monitoring services and that the investment of funds is in accordance with established guidelines. Oversees treasury and investment operations, ensuring policies and practices are in place to maximize cash flow, investment performance, and interest earnings on short-term cash.

Coordinates with MBA’s Investment Committee to ensure that MBA’s investment fiduciary responsibilities are achieved with respect to MBA’s Investment Policy Statement. Sets the agenda and prepares materials for quarterly investment committee meetings. Responsible for recording accurate minutes.

Manages the relationship with MBA’s external auditors. Responsible for the annual external audit and special audits, as requested by the Audit Committee. Coordinates and delivers organizational response to the requirements and requests of MBA’s Audit Committee, including non-recurring types of audits and reviews and the evaluation of MBA programs and procedures. Sets the agenda and prepares materials for quarterly Audit Committee meetings. Responsible for recording accurate meeting minutes.

Serves as the Treasurer for ODF and MISMO and a Trustee for RIHA.

Serves as a signature authority for the Association’s operating and other checking accounts.

Oversees the timely and accurate preparation and filing of the Association’s tax returns as well as other regulatory reports.

Board of Directors Engagement

Serves as a trusted advisor to the Board, providing clear and concise financial information and analysis.

Presents complex financial data to the Board in a compelling and understandable way.

Prepares and delivers board presentations, effectively communicating financial conditions, performance, and strategic outlook.

Procurement

Oversees and manages corporate procurement and travel to ensure efficient sourcing, negotiation, and acquisition of goods and services in alignment with organizational goals, budgetary constraints, and supplier diversity initiatives.

Opens Doors Foundation

Oversees the operations of the MBA Open Doors Foundation (ODF) under the leadership of the President, ensuring robust support for its initiatives and accuracy in financial information.

Committee Engagement

Serves as the staff liaison to the Investment Management Committee and the Audit Committee of the MBA Board of Directors. Provides periodic reports to the Board regarding financial and strategic matters.

Serves as a member of the SMT, with appropriate fiduciary responsibilities to the Association.

Key Selection Criteria

A minimum of 15+ years of financial and management experience, preferably including a not-for-profit or association background or in a medium- to large-sized, complex financial services organization. Mortgage Industry experience is a plus.

Financial leadership experience with strong team building, presentation, and analytical skills. Experience in strategic and operational planning, accounting, and investment management.

A minimum of 5 years’ Board of Director engagement experience preferred.

A financially oriented business executive with accomplishments in “going beyond the numbers,” including identifying and exploiting opportunities for reducing costs, improving productivity, and providing a good financial framework for the organization.

Strong technical skills and knowledge in all areas of accounting and financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cash management, management reporting, financial analysis, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear and concise information.

The ability to lead continuous process improvement initiatives and achieve efficiencies while sustaining a high quality and service level.

Strong leadership skills and the ability to build and motivate a high-performing Finance team.

Passion for diversity and inclusion and the ability to work collaboratively in a shared ownership model.

Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and diplomacy skills are essential.

Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance with a CPA or MBA.
