NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

Performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and the community are provided a safe, attractive, clean, and healthy environment for learning and work. Manages internal projects related to the maintenance and replacement of building components and systems.

This is an Essential position.

Facility Building Engineer oversees general maintenance, upkeep for the school facilities and grounds and custodial services. In this position, s/he is responsible for the efficient operation of the facility's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering (MEP) systems, building and site components as well as preventative maintenance, repairs, and custodial services. The Facility Building Engineer oversees and coordinates with school leadership and operations team in connection with major repairs and maintenance of the facility to ensure that the building has adequate heat, lighting, ventilation, plumbing, security or etc. for the safety and comfort of the staff and scholars. The Building Engineer will also direct and manage activities of the custodial staff ensuring that the building is clean and prepared daily for scholars. The Building Engineer will also direct and manage activities and personnel related to special, capital, and other grant related projects and deferred maintenance and replacements of building components and systems as assigned. This position also provides support as needed to other facilities within the GCS network.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Building Engineer shall:

1. Have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent with a minimum of 3 years', verifiable, maintenance and repair experience in medical, office or educational environments or have obtained a certification/license in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing or a related discipline.

2. Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license for the type of equipment to be driven, with no serious violations.

4. Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.

5. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.

6. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

7. Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

The Building Engineer shall be employed under the following terms:

1. Work year or twelve months.

2. Salary, benefits, leave time, and conditions specified in the Job Offer Letter

3. Conditions established by laws and codes of the State, and policies, rules, and regulations established by the CMO

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Building Engineer Worker shall:

1. Perform general maintenance and repair tasks in a variety of areas and as assigned by the Facilities Manager or School Leaders.

2. Perform only those maintenance and repairs that do not require a license or that they hold a license in.

3. Ensure that the work site and conditions are safe.

4. Perform assignments relating to ensuring all schools and district sites are able to safely open and function when assigned. This includes working cooperatively with custodial employees and school leadership during emergency operations.

5. Perform regular inspections of equipment and systems, resolving any abnormalities and hazards either through their own work or an outside vendor’s work.

6. Respond to emergency situations and perform necessary repairs.

7. Use the maintenance ticket system, making sure that work orders have been written and approved before performing tasks, except in emergency situations.

8. Keep a log of all maintenance functions and repairs performed.

9. Recommend repairs or procedures that are beyond the scope of responsibilities, skill, or experience, outlining the work needed and specifications required of an outside contractor.

10. Ensure that all applicable fire, safety, health, and environmental regulations and laws are observed and exceeded.

11. Maintain an adequate supply of parts and supplies usually used in repairs, and request needed supplies through the established procedures of the district.

12. Operate and maintain in a safe and operational condition all tools and equipment necessary to carry out job functions and responsibilities.

13. Remove snow and ice by shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps.

14. Resolve immediately any damage or vandalism to facilities, or theft of equipment.

16. Attend required meetings, including Right-To-Know and Safety Training, and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.

18. Notify and assist the administration and appropriate emergency personnel with any emergency, and potentially dangerous or unusual situations.

19. Use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.

20. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.

22. Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings.

23. Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.

24. Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, Tennessee school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and procedures, and contractual obligations. 25. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the supervisors, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

EVALUATION:

The Facilities Manager shall evaluate the Building Engineer in accordance with Policy this Job Description, and such other criteria as shall be established by Gestalt Community Schools.
