Temporary Information Technology Assistant

The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch Information Technology Division is seeking a Temporary Information Technology Assistant for a 12-month term in its Network Infrastructure Unit, with a primary focus on wireless and network operations support, documentation, and project coordination. This role offers hands-on experience supporting enterprise networking, wireless infrastructure, and data center operations across a multi-site judicial environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The selected candidate will support the Network Infrastructure Unit with day-to-day operational, documentation, and project coordination activities, with a strong emphasis on enterprise wireless (Wi-Fi) infrastructure. This position is designed to provide practical, real-world experience with enterprise networks and wireless technologies in a secure government environment. Responsibilities include:

• Wireless (Wi-Fi) Infrastructure Support: Assist with the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of enterprise wireless networks, including access point installation and provisioning, SSID and wireless controller configuration, signal coverage validation, and basic site surveys. Support troubleshooting of wireless connectivity, coverage gaps, and client device issues across courthouse and office locations.
• Network Operations Support: Assist with monitoring network health, switch and access point configuration, IP address management (IPAM), and basic troubleshooting of connectivity issues across LAN, WAN, and wireless environments under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Documentation and Diagramming: Develop and maintain network and wireless documentation including topology diagrams (Visio), heat maps, access point inventories, standard operating procedures, IP schemas, and as-built configurations for data center and remote site infrastructure.
• Infrastructure Project Coordination: Support ongoing projects such as wireless refreshes, network equipment upgrades and deployments, segmentation initiatives, and data center activities by tracking action items, maintaining task lists, and assisting with progress reporting.
• Cabling and Physical Infrastructure: Assist with structured cabling documentation, access point and patch panel labeling, rack elevations, and physical asset tracking within data center and communications rooms.
• Compliance and Security Support: Help maintain configuration records and documentation that support alignment with frameworks such as NIST 800-53 and CJIS, including assisting with evidence collection and audit readiness artifacts.
• IT Support and Administration: Provide general user support for network and wireless-related requests, assist with hardware staging and deployment, and support the broader Infrastructure team as needed.

This position is ideal for candidates with an interest in enterprise networking, wireless technologies, and data center operations who want practical experience within a government environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates should have:

• Either relevant experience in information technology or be actively pursuing a degree in a related field (Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent).
• Foundational understanding of networking and wireless concepts (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, Wi-Fi standards); coursework or certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, or CWNA are a plus but not required.
• Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to create and edit technical documentation clearly and accurately.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to follow through on multiple tasks.
• Attention to detail and a collaborative approach to working with both technical and non-technical staff.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a professional environment.
• A valid drivers license in good standing and the ability to pass a background check.

Successful candidates will receive $16.94 per hour plus potentially be eligible for health benefits after three months and sick time after four months.
