Temporary Accountant IWork with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region.Location: San Jose, CA (Onsite)Assignment Details:Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal yearWork Schedule: Full-Time: 40hrs/weekStart Date: to be discussedPay Rate: $39.50Role OverviewThe Accountant I is an entry-level professional accounting position responsible for performing detailed accounting work in support of centralized accounting functions. The role assists with financial reporting, account reconciliations, payroll accounting, fixed asset accounting, and general ledger activities while developing expertise in governmental accounting practices, financial analysis, and auditing. Employees work under close supervision and are expected to grow into full professional accounting responsibilities.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform professional accounting duties related to the analysis, maintenance, and auditing of accounting records.Prepare and post journal entries for payroll, benefits, accruals, allocations, and other accounting transactions.Reconcile bank accounts, asset and liability accounts, subsidiary ledgers, and payroll records.Process invoices, expense reimbursements, and other financial transactions while ensuring policy compliance.Assist in preparing financial reports, schedules, supporting documentation, and audit work papers.Maintain fixed asset records and prepare related reports.Process and validate payroll transactions, establish payroll information for new employees, and monitor payroll-related deductions and compliance requirements.Investigate and resolve inquiries from internal customers, vendors, and stakeholders.Support year-end closing activities, budget adjustments, and financial audits.Provide support and knowledge sharing to temporary staff, interns, and colleagues as needed.Required ExperienceOne (1) year of professional accounting experience.Experience working with accounting records, reconciliations, financial reporting, or payroll-related processes is desirable.Preferred:Governmental accounting experience.Payroll accounting and payroll processing experience.Experience with ERP or enterprise financial/payroll systems.Experience supporting audits, fixed asset accounting, or financial reporting activitiesRequired SkillsTechnical Skills:Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial accounting practices.Understanding of financial recordkeeping and reporting procedures.Basic governmental accounting knowledge.Account reconciliation and general ledger maintenance.Payroll processing and payroll audit/reconciliation skills.Fixed asset accounting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word.Familiarity with ERP financial systems and enterprise payroll systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Infor, or similar).Business mathematics and financial analysis skills.Soft Skills:Strong attention to detail and accuracy.Ability to learn and apply governmental accounting principles and procedures.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Effective written and verbal communication skills.Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.Customer service orientation and ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.Ability to work independently while following established procedures.Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to learn.Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate across departments.Education / CertificationsRequired:Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related fieldSubstitution:Directly related experience may substitute for education on the basis of 1.5 years of experience for one year of education, up to four yearsCertifications / Licenses:Valid California Driver's License may be required if driving is an essential function of the position.CPA, CMA, CGFM, or other accounting certifications are not required but would be considered preferred qualifications.
