CNC Setup & Operator

Job Title Load and operate Computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties:

Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece

Setup Lathe / Mill for next part to include: fixtures, chucks, spindle collets, sub-spindle parts, tool holders, tooling, inserts, Live-Tooling, Trunnion & rotary tables, bar feed, and programs.

Loads appropriate programs via on-board memory or flash drives, confirms program is current.

Verifies program and part with dry-runs to prevent crashing/damage.

Measures dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining

Use precision measuring instruments such as Calipers, Micrometers, Bore Gauges etc

Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required

Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications

Works with Set-up personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems

Conducts general maintenance of the machines they are operating: Coolant, lubrication oil levels.

Monitors chip/boring levels inside machine, chip conveyors, and chip depository bins. Clears obstructions as required.

Counts, packs, and labels finished parts

Transports finished parts over to shipping and receiving dept personnel if needed

Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions

Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

Computer Skills Basic Computer Skills including use of email may be required
