Mechanical Engineer - Industrial/Manufacturing

You are already an expert in your field. You are a Professional Engineer (P.E.) with 10 or more years of hands-on manufacturing and production Mechanical Engineering experience. You have a comprehensive understanding of plant and/or processengineering, machine guarding,and hardcore industrial safety experience.

This role asks you to bring this same set of skills to a different challenge: determining why an incident occurred. You will work alongside nationally respected experts on casework that is consequential to industry and society, and you will keep learning for the rest of your career.

Prior forensic experience is not required. We hire for deep industry knowledge. Robson Forensic will train you to apply your expertise in a forensic setting, based on our experience of nearly 40 years in providing expert witness services.

What you will do:
  • Investigate incidents involving equipment, safety products/procedures, material handling, hand tools, & plant layouts.
  • Analyze inadequacies in machine guarding, instructions, warnings, or personal protective equipment (PPE), etc., applying your comprehensive knowledge of standards and practices.
  • Write clear, scientifically sound reports.
  • Provide expert testimony.

You will delve into the "why" behind incidents and disputes, critically assessing decision-making, operational procedures, and the standards of care.

What we require
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or can obtain licensure in at least one state within 6 months.
  • Education:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering and/or a closely-related field.
  • Experience:10+ years of manufacturing and production experience, including design, installation, start-up, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting spanning a variety of industrial equipment; expertise must include design or specification of industrial equipment, material handling equipment (such as forklifts, aerial lifts, and cranes), industrial facility operation and maintenance processes, utility systems (steam, water, air, gas, etc.), and manufacturing processes.
  • Skills: Excellent technical, analytical, writing, and communication skills; ability tomanage a portfolio of 40-60 projects/clients.
  • Aptitude: Strong ability to convey complex technical findings into a clear, objective deliverable for non-technical audiences.
  • Other:Aclean background screen, a driver’s license, and the ability to drive.
Experience that helps, though not required:
  • Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM)
  • Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA)
  • Root cause failure analysis
  • Site incident investigations
  • Hazard analysis/risk assessments
Work style:

Approximately 20% of the role is travel for training, inspections, and providing sworn testimony on your investigative findings at a deposition or trial. The remainder is investigation, analysis, and report writing, working independently and as part of a collaborative team. Our experts offer and receive support/mentoring in a firm with over 100 scientists, engineers, and other professionals and manage a portfolio of 50-70 projects/clients.
