About the Job

Overview: The Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) creates comprehensivegeologic maps and associated databases to support management ofwater and mineral resources across the state. This position focuseson the application of machine Learning methods to introduce and/orimprove efficiencies in daily MGS workflows. A second focus of thisposition is to improve quality control on our databases byimproving methods to identify database errors. This includes but isnot limited to cross-checking records for missing values,inconsistencies between fields (e.g. differences between PublicLand Survey Coordinates, addresses and digital locations;inconsistencies in depth cased and depth drilled fields, staticwater levels and stratigraphic codes). Work for this position will be completed in office settings andworking remotely and will be performed both independently and underdirect supervision of a geologist and senior staff. We are seekinga highly motivated individual to bring their unique experience andperspective to our research community.

Qualifications

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Data Science or related field, oreducation and work experience in geology totaling at least fouryears (such as an associate’s degree and two years ofexperience).

Demonstrated ability to write and assemble Python code and/orother platform-independent programing language.

Demonstrated ability to incorporate Large Language Modelsand/or other machine-learning (AI) tools into applicationcode.

Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy

Experience in Microsoft office products (Excel, Word)

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using the County Well Index database

Familiarity with the geology of Minnesota

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Work in an office setting daily

Licensed and able to drive vehicles

Work Environment

Most of the work for this position is performed in an officesetting which is located off-campus near University Ave and HWY 280 in St. Paul. Up to 40% of work can be done remotely (work fromhome).

About the Department

The Minnesota Geological Survey is a research and service arm ofthe Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Sciences at theUniversity of Minnesota. It investigates the geology of Minnesotaand provides basic public information on the geology of the state.The Survey works with state, county, and regional offices to set upgeologic databases and provide technical guidance for waterresource planning, land management and mineral exploration policy,energy system development, and other planning and resourcemanagement activities.

Pay Range: $22.28/hr - $22.35 ($46,342.4-$46,488 annually); depending on education/qualifications/experience
