Job Description

Position Overview

Reporting to the Plant Operations Manager, the Shift Supervisor assumes overall operational management and responsibility for an assigned 12‑hour rotating shift. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective operation of the facility, including the monitoring of all plant generation equipment and compliance with all federal and state regulations. The Shift Supervisor routinely tours the plant to oversee personnel, troubleshoot operational issues, and take direct action during emergencies to preserve plant integrity and personnel safety.

Role and Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs personnel in the conduct of required work activities.
  • Maintains a safe working environment, ensuring all personnel follow applicable policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Approves all requests for removing equipment from service, ensuring equipment is properly cleared and tagged, and issuing safety permits.
  • Directs the completion of shift, daily, weekly, and monthly checks.
  • Coordinates unit operations and maintenance activities, including assigning priority for maintenance work.
  • Coordinates emergency response efforts, such as hurricane preparedness, staffing, and environmental spill response.
  • Interfaces and communicates effectively with dispatching, maintenance, and other organizations.
  • Provides regular performance feedback to employees and directs technical training and development for all personnel on the assigned shift.
  • Ensures all Company resources are utilized in a cost‑effective manner, monitors expenditures, and reports on the performance of the assigned area.
  • Maintains working relationships with employees consistent with personnel policies and the principles of the bargaining unit Agreement.
  • Performs field inspections of job sites and work in progress to recognize and proactively resolve problems.

Professional and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or a related discipline with 4 years of operations experience at a utility‑level power plant.
  • In lieu of a degree, a High School Diploma with 8 years of operations experience at a utility‑level power plant.
  • Minimum 5 years of specific experience in power/steam plant operations and maintenance, including hands‑on experience with high‑pressure boilers and electrical generation.
  • Promotes productivity and teamwork through open communication, timely decision‑making, and high‑performance standards.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and personnel management skills with the ability to operate in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Self‑motivated individual who takes full ownership of activities and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all levels of the organization.
  • Must possess a valid and current NYC High Pressure Stationary Engineer License.
  • Must obtain and maintain a State of Connecticut DEEP Class 1 Resource Recovery Chief Operator Certificate.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work 12‑hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays to support 24/7 staffing.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in confined spaces or at heights up to 100 feet.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators; facial hair in the respirator sealing area is not permitted.
