Embedded Software EngineerWe are looking for an embedded software engineer to join the IoT group that builds the software for the microcontroller-based sensor hardware designed and manufactured in-house. Our products offer an interesting engineering challenge: microcontrollers with just a few hundred kilobytes of RAM and code space must collect data from sensors such as accelerometers and GPS, communicate with back-end systems over the Internet and nearby devices with Bluetooth, perform over-the-air upgrades with new firmware, and manage cryptographically-secured storage – all while using so little power that they can run for years on a battery.CMT is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to help us change the world. CMT has helped protect over 65 million drivers and prevent over 126,000 crashes worldwide. We build AI to solve some of the most difficult challenges in mobility — understanding and reducing risk, detecting crashes, and getting people life-saving help. The problems are hard. The impact is real. No matter your role, your work will matter at CMT.Responsibilities:Collaborating with colleagues in the firmware group as we build new features and entirely new products together: deciding on the right software architecture, writing code and tests, measuring key metrics such as power use, and keeping the codebase healthy in the face of increasing complexity. You will participate in the entire design process as our software group negotiates with product managers and hardware engineers to find the intersection between what's technically feasible and what customers want.Complete any additional tasks as they ariseQualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience and/or certification in a related field4+ years of relevant professional work experienceAbsolute fluency in C, C++, and Python programmingStrong experience with systems software issues – e.g., race conditions, memory managementExperience working at the boundary of hardware and software – e.g., interrupt handling, device driver development, bringing up untested hardwareComfortable with the Linux command-lineComfortable with gitTrack record of writing clean, readable, testable codeBe nice. We're nice, and it's not fun to work with people who aren'tHave a "leave things better than you found them" philosophy. For example: If you're adding a new feature and discover that it would be cleaner to refactor some code first, do the refactorGood engineering taste: for example, finding the right balance of spending time on code health vs. making forward progress on new features in the face of deadline pressureNice to Haves:Experience with one or more RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar) including task management, synchronization primitives, and real-time schedulingExperience with ARM Cortex-M families specifically (e.g., STM32, Nordic nRF, Infineon PSoC, Microchip SAM)Proficiency with hardware debugging tools — JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power profilersComfortable reading schematics, datasheets, and reference manualsExperience with embedded build systems, cross-compilation toolchains, and linker scriptsExperience with platform or MCU migration projects, including hardware bring-up on new siliconBackground in electrical engineering or hands-on PCB-level debuggingFamiliarity with secure boot, firmware signing, and hardware security modulesExperience with BLE 5.x specifications and protocol stack portingExperience with Amazon Sidewalk, LoRa/LoRaWAN, or cellular (LTE-M, NB-IoT)Knowledge of EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) or similar regulatory compliance frameworksExperience with devicetree, Kconfig, or similar hardware abstraction mechanismsContributions to open-source embedded projects (Zephyr, FreeRTOS ecosystem, etc.)Compensation and Benefits:Fair and competitive salary based on skills and experience, and annual performance bonusEquity may be awarded in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance, matching 401k, short-term & long-term disability and parental leaveUnlimited Paid Time Off including vacation, sick days & public holidaysFlexible scheduling and work from home policy depending on role and responsibilitiesBase Salary RangeThe base salary range for this position is: $130,800 to $163,600.
